Summer of 1990

Gretchen Sholz laid in her bed as she listened to her parents argue. Her mother, Maryanne Sholz, wanted her father to leave the mafia lifestyle. Her father, Walter Sholz, wasn't about to do that. He stated to her that this is his life. But if she wants to leave she may. She just listened as her parents fought. At five years she never knew that this would come to impact her so greatly.

"Walter! She's just a baby! This life will kill her," she heard her mother yell.

"She'll be fine. I wouldn't ever let her get hurt," her father stated with a strong conviction in his voice.

"You can't guarantee that, Walter. You can't predict the future. What if your enemies come in the night? What if they come when you're gone on business? Then what? She'll either be kidnapped and tortured. Or even worse killed," her mother stated with a pleading tone.

"They'd be stupid to come here. You know the security I have here. And you're not taking my daughter from me. She belongs here in Hastens, Michigan. Where she was born and where she'll be raised," her father told her mother. With a tone that left no room for discussion.

"Well she's also my daughter. I birthed her. Nursed her. Woke with her. Stayed awake with her at night. Always nursed her back to health," her mother spat back with heat.

"You mean the nannies did all that. You may have nursed her but they had to wake you because you refused to get up with her. You were always shopping while leaving our daughter here with others to look after her because living the parent less life has always been more important. Whenever I've been home, I've always been there for her," her father calmly pointed out. And it was true. Gretchen can always remember the times with her father. Her mother not so much.

"Well how about we take this to court. Let's see how they feel about a child living in this lifestyle shall we," her mother stated.

"Oh yes drag her through something that could be traumatic for her. That would be great. Look Maryanne leave. You can come here to see her whenever you want. But she isn't leaving this house. Period," her father explained. Gretchen smiled huge. She's always been close to her father.

The next morning Gretchen walked into the kitchen, to see her father crying. For only being five years old, it broke her heart to see the strongest man shes knows to be seated at the table crying. She just stood there as her eyes watered. For all the fighting and disagreements her parents have had, her father has always loved her mother unconditionally. Anytime she was out and passes have been made towards her father, he just politely told them he happily has a family and wouldn't jeopardize it for a fling. Some smile and went on but others glared nastily at her and stormed off muttering to themselves. Then again her father is very handsome. Tall at six foot eight, muscular build but leaner than bodybuilders. Fair skin, beautiful cerulean blue eyes and dark brown hair with highlights of natural blonde and red. Always in tailored suits. Hair done to perfection. Silently she walked over to her father and hugged him.

Walter lifted his head from his cupped hands. Looking at his beautiful daughter, he smiled at her. Picking her up, he set her on his lap. He held her tight and wept harder. His daughter looked so much like her mom. He actually knew it was dangerous for his only child to be here while he's in this business. But he couldn't let both of his girls go.

"Mommy left," he said with a shakey voice.

"I know daddy. I heard the fighting," she whispered. For being only five Gretchen is very smart.

"I'm sorry you had to hear that. I was hoping you didn't," he smiled sadly as his baby girl.

"It's alright daddy. I wouldn't have wanted to go anyways. I love mommy but I'm not as close to her as I am to you. I have a feeling life wouldn't be so great," she whispered. Knowing it was true. Behind closed doors, her mother had always been cold towards her. She never hit or called Gretchen names. But you could tell she would rather have been somewhere else.

"I'm so happy that you're here with me. And very glad you'd rather be here with me," he smiled as he kissed his daughters daughters forehead. Soon breakfast was made. Walters bestfriend, Hans Fischer and his daughter Katrin Fischer, joined them. Walter tild Hans what happened as their daughters talked and giggled. The girls got ready for their day with their nannies. The nannies have raised these girls so they get special bonding time together. Katrins mother died in childbirth. Hans wife loved him dearly and Walter was always happy for it. Never jealous. Walter and Hans got ready and left for various meetings and business deals.
