"Positive." I said, tears streaming down my cheeks.
"Positive?" His voice shook while looking at me.
I nodded and smiled at him. He covered his face with his palms before hugging me tight.
"I'm going to be a dad." He whispered.
"Yes." I answered.
It was one of the moments in my life that I will never forget. We were so happy about it that we started to cry out of joy. Why wouldn't we? We spent years trying to bear a child. We broke our hearts many times because of false hopes. And finally, He finally gave us what we wished, we deserved.
"Cassandra, honey." Peter, my husband called me from the living room.
I dried my hand before going out the kitchen. I saw my husband preparing his thing for work. He is working downtown as a store manager.
"You're leaving already? I haven't finish cooking breakfast." I stated.
"Yes, hun. I heard that lots of tourists will arrive today and Mr. Gibrick said we have to open the store earlier." He explained.
Mr. Gibrick is the owner of the store where he works. He was a 50-year-old store owner. His family had left him all alone, that's why sometimes he is grumpy.
"Ah but will you be early for dinner?" I asked.
"I will try my best to come home, my wife." He meaningfully said. I smiled and kissed his cheeks. He hugged me before kneeling and placing a kiss on my stomach.
"I will come home."
It was the fourth month of my pregnancy. I was very careful with what I do because of the fact that my pregnancy is sensitive. I spent my days alone in our house. I would grab some books to read or if I'm bored, I would take a walk around the block. I thought today was no difference.
I glanced at the clock, the small hand in front of the number 8. Usually Peter would be home by 7 but I guess the store's really that busy. I covered the food before going to our room.
It was 9 when I finished all the chores I had to do before going to sleep but not a shadow of Peter appeared. I always get paranoid easily whenever I wait. I sent a text to him but I didn't get a reply. Feeling a little grumpy and worried, I layed my back to the comfy bed and closed my eyes.
My eyes fluttered when I felt a familiar warmth beside me. I felt Peter kissed my nape wrapped his arms around my stomach.
"I'm home." Was all I can hear before I really drifted to sleep.
I woke up late this morning and there's no evidence of Peter in our room. It was late so maybe he left for work already. I got up and grabbed my phone. There were a lot texts and calls, from Mr. Gibricks, from an unknown number and one from Peter.
I opened Peter's text and it says I love you always.
I smiled because of the sweetness of my husband. Our little one is so lucky to have such loving father.
I opened Mr. Gibricks' text and my smile automatically dropped.
Cassandra, your husband met an accident last night! We already rushed him to the hospital but his state is critical.
My heart clenched while staring at the text message. I was about to reply when Mr. Gibricks texted again.
If you're awake, please go to the hospital, Cassandra. He'd been waiting all night for you. He's in a state of coma right now.
I dropped my phone.
It was one of the moments in my life that I will never forget. Looking at his lifeless, cold body in that hospital bed makes me want to pass out.
"He's been waiting for you all night." Mr. Gibricks' words echoed in my mind.
As soon as I held his hand, the sound of beeping echoed the room. Never in my life have I felt helpess before, just now. The sound became louder that I had to cover both of my ears. Tears were uncontrollably coming out of my eyes. Two nurses rushed to my lifeless husband and began to pump his chest.
I was just standing there while looking at my husband being revived. It was a morbid a day for me.
"Time of death, 8:15 AM."
It was the time when he left yesterday and now he left again, but now he won't be coming home again.
