Chapter 2
It had been a few of days since her arrival at Litchfield and Amelia had made friends with a lot of different people and refused to stay with just the whites.
Amelia had mixed with different groups and had made, reluctant 'friends' with Red. Red was the one who was reluctant to speak to the girl. There was a nun that she was also on friendly terms with and had began to do yoga with a woman with the name 'yoga Jones'.
Amelia was currently laying on the grass outside, hands crossed behind her head and eyes closed . She still hadn't been assigned a bed or a job but that was alright.Suddenly there was someone blocking her light, which caused her to open her eyes, squinting them from the sudden light . It was her Spanish speaking friend, Mendoza, with another woman, who was also older than Amelia.
"Buenos dias, bellas damas" Amelia stated and moved her arm to pat the ground next to her before closing her eyes again hearing them chuckle.
(Good morning beautiful ladies)
Mendoza sat the closest to her and the woman next to Mendoza. "I saw you over here on your own and thought I'd say hello."
Amelia let out a mock gasp. "What's this? Does Mendoza care about a lowly white girl like me?"
Mendoza laughed gently in response. "Azul, this is Ruiz, Ruiz this is McCallum, the youngest in here now I think."
"You look twelve." Ruiz stated. Amelia realised that Ruiz, going by how hard her voice was, she might have been one of those people who did not appreciate the fact that she had no regard for the unofficial rules of segregation.
Amelia laughed. "Yeah I get that a lot. Especially with my haircut."
Mendoza laid down and closed her eyes enjoying the heat. "How are you feeling on day four is it, of your stay at Litchfield?" The woman questioned her.
"I really want a cigarette I'll tell you that right now." Amelia complained to the older women, throwing her hands up in the air in protest.
Ruiz nodded. At least the girl knew Spanish from what the other girls had told her. "I hear that."
Mendoza smirked, watching the girl have a slight tantrum. "I'm not sure who sneaks in cigarettes, ask around, you have people in every community- some reluctant mind you."
"Why? I'm a delight to be around."
"Says who?"
Amelia playfully bumped her shoulder into Mendoza's. "Esto es abuso!"
(This is abuse)
Mendoza rolled her eyes. "Mentirosa."
(Liar)
Amelia slowly pulled herself up and felt her back pop. "Estoy fuera! Vendré a molestarte mas tarde mamá." McCallum's voice was riddled with humour, but she looked at Mendoza to make sure she hadn't overstepped her boundaries by calling the woman that.
(I'm out! I'll come to bother you later mom.)
Mendoza laughed, she didn't mind that McCallum called her that, it was comforting to know that the young girl wasn't completely alone. And at least she saw Mendoza as a friend or mother figure. "Siempre me molestas pequeña mierda."
(you always bother me little shit)
Amelia smiled at Ruiz after she stood up and stretched. "Encantado de conocerte, Ruiz." Amelia spoke, her voice chipper. She gave them both a final wave and jogged off with a bounce in her step.
