Built on Equality

This poem means a lot to me, it won a school competition and is now going onto the county level and I really want people to read it so I can get my message across.

Liberty and Justice for who?

The only Red, White, and Blue
that I can see
is the color
of our skin
after you've beaten us to a pulp
for being who we truly are,
or those colors are
flashing behind us
Just because our skin is colored,
colored like our flags
and not
colorless like yours.

We're supposed to be able
to wave our Rainbow pride,
or keep our heads held high
with our darker skin,
with absolutely no care in the world
but instead
we have to wear
our fear like a mask,
and proceed
with caution.

And because of all of this,
we are scared for our lives.
Not afraid of dying,
but afraid of living.

Our country was built
on Equal Rights.
We the people.
Conceived in Liberty.
Is this all just a joke to you?

Liberty and Justice for All.
