My Name's Sawyer, Sawyer Matthews and I ain't like any other girl from Austin, Texas during 1876. I am the only girl to wear a shirt and jeans and that makes me look like a cowboy. Also Sawyer ain't exactly a girly name 'cause my parents thought I was going to be a boy. So they named me Sawyer. Even though I'm sixteen, that don't mean I'm 'mature and ladylike' like my mama says I aughta be. Mama said I needed to study harder 'cause one day she and Papa won't be here to make the important decisions for me. I believe her exact words were "Sawyer, you need to study harder and pay more attention to your books. One day your father and I won't be here to help you make decisions."

I don't think either of us knew that would be sooner than later.
