Chapter 07:

Daniel's POV:

After school Matt and i headed for his house. The conversation we had is still kinda disturbing me...

"Um, so what;s going on with Melissa?" Matt asked, raising his brows at me.

"Nothing. Why do you ask?" I said casually.

"I've seen you two hangout quite often... You know you miss classes togehter and all that..." he said.

"Wow! We dont miss classes together. We just co-incidently miss class at the same time... And frankly, I like it with her. She is really fun to be with." I confessed.

"Um, so you like her then?" he asked.

"Maybe... Kinda... I dont really know..." I said and shrugged.

"Man you are smitten. It's written all over your face." Matt teased me.

I knew he was having fun.

"Shutup Matt. Get out of the car now." I said as I pulled over his house.

We went in and went straight to the game room.

Autho Theft really does busy you.

It was around 6 when I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket and asaw Mom calling.

"Hello"

"Dan where are you?"

"Matt's place. Just about to leave."

"Okay. Drive safe."

"I will." I said and hung up.

I left Matt's place around ten minutes later and drove straight home.

"Mom I'm home." I called out as I shut the door behind me.

"Over here in the kitchen." My mum called out in return.

I went in the kithcen only to find her with an inscrutable expression on her face and a bowl filled with some cake batter.

"Mom, whatsup?" I asked.

"Huh?" She said, totally distracted.

"Um, what are you trying your hands at today?" i asked.

My mum had never been a good cook, as far as I remember. She wasn't bad either, just average.

But yeah, I could assure you I was a better cook than her.

"Um... Chocolate cake?" She smiled at me weakly.

"What's the occasion?" I smiled.

"Just like that!" She said.

"Um okay... You get all cleaned up. I'll do the rest." I said.

"If you insist..." She chuckled and left the kitchen.

Yeah it seemed cliche that I was baking a cake being a guy and stuff... But if there was one thing I learned while growing up with my dad it was cooking all

kinds of things. We were pretty lazy to call for food 'cause it required either of us to call and order... So I initiated cooking and I was pretty decent at it.

I had just put the cake to bake when my phone buzzed.

"Hey Dad!" I said, cheerfully.

"Daniel, how are you?" He asked.

"Awesome, but I miss you." I said.

"I miss you too son. Food sucks here." He said and I laughed.

"Coming to food, I am baking a cake right now!" I said, trying to tease him.

"Cake huh? It's not your mum's birthday today, is it?" He asked, seriously.

"Dad!" I growled.

"Okay fine. Relax!" He said.

"How is the new place?" i asked.

"Um, right now, boring. I'm counting on it getting better." He said.

"It will it will." I muttered.

"Where's your mom?" He asked.

"Hold on for a minute." I said.

"MO-Ommmmm" I shouted loud enough for the neighbours to hear, only to annoy my dad who was waiting on the other side of the phone.

"I'm here in the living room Daniel. I'm not on Mars for God's sake!" Mum said angrily.

"Dad's on the phone. He wants to talk to you." I said as I made my way into the living room and handed her the phone.

In the mean time I went up to my room and changed into my sweats.

I came down in time for dinner. The cake had been baked almost perfectly and I was pretty content with it.

We had some risotto for dinner, and cake for dessert.

"Mum, do you have a Melissa in your class?" I asked.

"Yeah, why?" Mum said. She had a peeved look on her face.

"Just curious. You sound like you hate her or something..." I said.

"Um, I think I do. She is a bit sardonic in the way she talks, and she talks to me as if I am her mortal enemy or something. All she cares about is her running and

she is always too distracted." Mum growled.

I could definitely see anger in her eyes now.

"Mom, relax. She's not here, and neither are her parents!" I teased.

"Hmmm" She said.

Later when I retired to bed I couldnt stop thinking about Melissa, and how she laughed when I made a complete fool of myself in front of her borther.

Her eyes sparkled so much, her face looked so contended.

Melissa could make me stop thinking about anything else but her for hours at a stretch. She had me thinking about her all day long...

I guess Matt was right, I really did like her.

But my mom hated her.
