4 weeks.
4 weeks Alice had laid in this room; at least, that's what the tally marks she'd edged into the drywall told her. If there was one thing that she missed, it was the fresh air. The only opening she got to the outside world was when she was taken to the darkroom for another testing.
Most of her memories were wiped already.
She hardly remembered what there was to miss.
The only memories she could remember now were in the readings, when she tested and saw her memories and in a dazey, soggy kind of way.
She couldn't remember a thing. Her purpose, why she was here, who her captors were.
She just knew that they knew that she knew something. And she knew she didn't know what they knew she knew.
Alice curled her finger around a metallic spoon and scraped it across the table. Her white cardigan and leggings to long for her limbs as they dragged across the linoleum flooring. She'd felt this way before, the constant gnawing at the bottom of her spine, she wondered how she knew it. Had her thoughts not been poised and plucked and preened to the tune of a simple test administrator, maybe she would understand why she no longer felt safe; and why she could no longer see the sunlight.
The sound of a heavy door echoed through the tiny room and Alice instinctively cowered, shoving her arms up over her head and wrapping her ankles around the legs of the chair.
"Now, Now my dear, you're going to be a good girl this time aren't you?" A flat, calculated voice sliced through the silence of the cell
"No, no please" Alice shook her head frantically as a pair of hands grabbed around her shoulders "Please let me go! I can't do it again, I can't" Alice broke free of the hands and fell to the floor, curling herself into a ball, "Please let me go, please, please, please"
"Oh my dear." The voice said again and laced his fingers through her hair, "That's just not my call to make."
Alice awoke strapped to a cold chair once more in the middle of the dark room. Tears stung her eyes and she allowed them access was to roll down her cheeks.
"Good morning Alice" A man with blonde hair smiled through the dimmed lights. "I see you're ready to start phase 3 of our little experiment"
Alice closed her eyes tight and shook her head like it could somehow free her from her metal restraints. Though her memory fried during the first week, (Phase one took great care of making her forget anything and everything about herself- quickly peeling back every layer until they got to the piece of information they were looking for), she knew exactly what was coming next. Alice remembered reading about torture methods and which were most effective. If she had information they wanted, she couldn't wrap her mind around why they didn't just go ahead with the water boarding or good old cutting off fingers technique. Slowly making her forget ever last piece of herself was a long and complicated process. And if it were information they wanted, why not pry it out of her? If they just wanted to see what she knew that she wasn't supposed to, why not just kill her?
'God just kill me'
Alice couldn't do a damn thing as the wires dug deep into her flesh and the simulation began.
"Alice?"
She didn't look up. She'd seen him before.
"Alice, look at me."
She didn't. She couldn't. She looked anywhere else. Down. Her restraints were off, when did that happen.
"Baby look at me, can't you see me? Don't you miss me?" The voice echoed in her head. He sounded so sad, is broken.
