Nodding her head to the music pulsing through her headphones, Sterling continued to stock the records in alphabetical order by the artist. Only to be bothered by a light tap on her shoulder, Sterling jumped slightly and turned to face her co-worker and best friend, Kace. Noiseless words coming out of his mouth were brought back meaning by her taking off the headphones that accompanied her ears. Kace was only asking for Sterling to finish up then she could go on lunch since the business was a little slow at the moment. Kace walked away after Sterling nodded in agreement seeming as that was the only thing she could do.

Sterling was mute. No, she was not a selective mute. She was not graciously given the chance to be able to speak, no. Sterling was born mute. Ever since her parents tried to teach her how to talk like any normal parents, she could not talk. Her parents took her to speech therapists at the age of 4, when she should've been talking and babbling, but they all said the same thing, "she's just a late bloomer." After 22 years, she still never spoke a word. When she was 14 her doctor told her that something didn't form correctly when she was developed, leaving her mute.

Once all of the records were stocked, Sterling grabbed her backpack and started for the nearest coffee shop. Her black vans, making a quiet padding sound against the pavement as she strolled down the street. Her matte black headphones around her neck were her statement piece since she could not speak, she played music to express herself while her other best friend, River sang. Sterling only played 3 instruments, ukulele, piano, and drums. She always thought that it's better to be almost perfect at a few than be mediocre a bunch.

After arriving at the coffee shop, she quickly got out her pen and notepad and flipped to her usual order. Once her drink was ordered, she found a seat and shot a text to River asking if she wanted to get lunch together. River agreed and told Sterling to meet her at Taco Bell. Taking the last sip of her coffee, Sterling grabbed her bag and headed towards the Taco Bell next door to meet River. Writing down her order, she handed it to the cashier and let him keep the change since she couldn't be bothered with it.

After waiting for what seemed to be an eternity, River finally showed up but she wasn't alone. With her was a guy who seemed to be around her age and VERY handsome. With gray/blue eyes and looked almost 6'1" compared to Sterlings 5'11" height; he was perfect. Before she could stand up, River spoke, "Hey sorry, this is my cousin, he's in town for a couple weeks and my brother told me to show him around since he had to work." I just smiled and nodded at him while he put his hand out.

"Hey, um, I'm Anthony." She smiled and shook his hand before reaching into her notebook and grabbing the piece of paper with her name. He looked at it and smiled, "Sterling, hm, I like your name." She smiled and bowed my head lightly as a thank you. Sterling was actually happy that he didn't ask any questions but assumed River told him about her.

After the encounter, River gave sterling a hug and whispered in her ear in a sing-song voice, "Someone's got a crush~" Sterling only swatted her friend away and gave her a glare as she sat back down where her coffee was. "So, Anthony this is Sterling, her favorite color is yellow and she loves old records. She actually works at the music store down the street." River spoke, glancing at Sterling every now and then to make sure she got the facts right. Nodding Sterling gave her a proud look and smiled at Anthony. Sterling noticed the slight confusion in Anthony's eyes. She quickly got out her notepad and wrote out 'I'm also mute.' She handed it to him and he read it then looked back at her with a glint in his eyes.

"Do you know sign language?" He managed to get out. Sterling nodded signed, 'Do you?' He signed back 'yeah one of my old friends was deaf and he taught me sign language so we could communicate easier' She smiled happily as River sat there watching. She had helped teach River sign language and she got pretty good at it. You smiled at her and signed. 'No more secret conversations' she laughed and shook her head at you.

After about half an hour, Sterling had to go back to work. She stood up and told them that she had to go back to work. River gave her a hug while Anthony just stood there. After letting go of River, Sterling turned to Anthony and shook her head with a smile before pulling him into a quick hug as well. She made her way back to the music store but was stopped by a hand grabbing her upper arm gently. She turned around to be met with those gray eyes again. He handed her a piece of paper and signed while saying 'We should hang out again' Sterling nodded and signed a thank you before walking back into the store.

For the rest of the day, a smile was permanently on Sterling's face. She only hoped to see him again.
