The several days went by without much of anything happening. Over the next few days I learned more about my friends.
Shay was 16, a temperamental werewolf with a track record for causing trouble. She had been I the prison for two years now.
James was a cool yet somewhat reserved 578 year old vampire. He is actually only 17, but he likes to think/say that he is older, he says that it impresses girls. (I think that if he was truly that old it would be creepy to date him.) James had also only been here for a year.
Logan had arrived at almost the same time as James which explained why they were such good friends. Logan was 17.75 years old (he liked to remind everyone that he was the oldest) and a shapeshifter.
Sam and I were both 17 although she was older by a few days. She was an Allazei, which is a fae that looks human until they turn 18. When they are 18 they have to undergo this terrible process where they can either become a powerful shapeshifter or a rabid animal creature thing that has tone killed.
Sam is only a few months away from the change and although she doesn't show it, I can tell that she is scared. The success rate for the test is 50%, and that is if you have all the right training.
On the bright side, until Sam turns we will both be stuck in human bodies. I am not human of course, but I might as well be. I am a Changeling.
For those of you who don't know what that is, I am basically a dragon in her human form. When I was little, my parents made me take in my human form in order to blend in better.
That's good and ll expect that I can't transform back into my dragon self unless I have a strong emotion. I have tried to get furious, depressed, extremely happy and a bunch of other emotions but no matter what I just can't take my true form.
Oh and then there is Jess. I would say that I learned more about her, but I try my best to avoid her at all costs. I don't want to feel hopeless like I did when she shook my hand. While I had felt happy, I didn't like that felling that a person could have that much control over me and my actions.
So when I noticed that Jess wasn't at lunch over the next few days I didn't question it. I just assumed that she was "feeding" on someone.
I was sitting with my group, but since I had to go to the bathroom I got up from the table. I picked up my tray and after dropping it off in the kitchen, I went I to the hallway. I hadn't go to the bathroom during lunch before, so after a few minutes I was completely lost.
I was just about to turn back to the cafeteria, when I heard something crash in one of the rooms.
I crossed the hallway making sure that it was clear and approached the door where the sound had come from. I pushed opened the door to find Jess sitting on one of those hospital check-up tables.
"Jess? Jess what are you doing here?"
I closed the door behind me as I approaches her. she was wearing the normal blue top and gray sweatpants.
Jess jumped off the table and spun to face me, "Oh, hey Tess. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be with your little posse?"
I had noticed that when Jess talked she lightly pressed her hand against her stomach as if it hurt.
"Yeah well I was just looking for the bathroom when I heard something crash in here. Are you sure you are ok?"
Jess straightened up a bit more, "Yeah I am fine perfectly fine."
"OK" As I turned to go Jess asks, " Hey have you ever been to the roof."
"Um...no. I haven't been to the roof. We aren't given the clearance to get that far."
"Clearance, yeah that little obstacle." Jess chuckles to herself and moved passed me into the hallway.
I stood in the doorway watching her for a bit before deciding to follow her. I had always been a bit of a curious person and I wouldn't ever pass up the chance to get to know Jess more while scoping out the prison a bit more.
Jess moved confidently through the halls until the reached a guard posted by a door with keypad. I was about to turn back the way we came, but Jess simply grabbed my arm and pulled me up to the guard. She quickly let go of my hand and reached up to touch the guard's face.
"You know it would mean a lot to me if you would open the door for me and my friend here. I'm sure that that wouldn't be a problem for a big strong man such as yourself."
I watched in stocked silence as the guard turned to putty in Jess's hand and simply turned and entered the 6 digit code into the keypad.
Without another word Jess walked past the dazed guard and beckoned for me to follow. I ran up to catch up to her.
"How did you do that? Why don't they have better security if they know that you can do that?"
Jess chuckled, "You ask a lot of questions you know. I don't often use my powers on the guards, there are other ways to get a smoke in. I just wanted to show you the roof. If I use my charms to much then security would build up, but I get away with it."
Jess opened a heavy steel door, and the sunlight came flooding into the stairwell. Jess walked to one of the air vent pipes on the roof and pulled out a beat up packet of cigarettes and a book of matches. She sat down on the ledge of the roof and patted the seat next to her for Tess to sit down.
Tess sat down and looked out into the prison compound and to the world beyond. The sky was a deep blue with a few white clouds moving lazily across it. The compound seemed to stretch on forever, but in the far off distance I could see a mountain range. Surrounding the compound was a thick green forest. It would be fairly easily to hide in the forest, but the only true chance of escape would be to make it to the mountains.....
My thoughts were interrupted with the smell of tobacco coming from the end of Jess's cigarette. She lit another one with the burning end of hers and handed it to me.
"Here. It will help calm you down."
I grabbed the cigarette and brought it up to my lips. I shut my eyes and breathed in the fumes. I only lasts about two seconds before I started coughing so hard that Jess had to grab my arm to keep me from falling off the ledge of the building.
After I had calmed down a bit more Jess said, "You know it is kind of funny that you are a dragon, but you can't handle tobacco smoke."
"Yeah I know. I guess it's because..."
I turned around to better face her, "Wait, how did you know I was a Dragon? I only told my friends. Did one if them tell you?!?!"
Jess finished her cigarette and picked up my unfinished one. "Calm down T, I just know."
"But that is not possible. My parents created a super strong field that would prevent anyone from knowing what I am."
Jess turned to me, "Listen, I'm a succubus. I have been with just about every fae possible. I once met a Changeling and when I noticed the ring of bite marks on your hand it reminded me of him because he had a similar mark on his hand."
"Oh. Well that simplifies it."
Jess smoked the rest of her cigarette in silence. I looked off into the distance trying to remember as more of the landscape as possible for future notice.
Jess took a final drag and then flicked the butt of the cigarette off the roof.
"Come one we better get back before we are missed."
The rest of the way back down to the cafeteria was uneventful. When the sounds of the lunchroom met our ears, Jess started to turn down another hallway.
Before she left I ran up to her, "Hey, thanks, you know, for showing me the roof.'
I was turning to leaving when she grabbed my arm, "Hey for your own safety you better come up with a story to explain the bite marks on your hand. I would hate to think of what they would do if they found out you were one of the last dragon Changelings."
I watched as Jess left before going into the lunchroom to sit with my friends again.
