As I led the way towards the fields that led to my village, Niall put an arm around my back and rested his had on my other arm. I looked at him and he smiled that lop sided smile and gave me a squeeze.
As we walked across the first field we talked about things. Random things again, like why we hated tinned ham or how annoying fan girls were.
Somehow we got to the subject of horses, and Niall told me a story of how he fell off one once.
‘Oh wow, you ride?’ I said, surprised. He nodded and smiled, clearly pleased I was impressed.
‘I grew up with a friend who owned a farm, his horse was called Bella and he taught me to ride her.’ He smiled at the thought of the memory, and I smiled, imagining a little blonde boy sitting on a horse and bouncing up and down as he trotted. I let out a giggle and Niall looked at me.
‘Oh, amused are we at the fact I had a girly hobby?’ He joked.
‘No, no, never!’ I said in a posh voice and he laughed.
I suggested stopping to rest as we came to the river and the bridge, and we sat down on the bank.
I rested my head on his shoulder, tired. He pressed his nose into my hair and smelled it, I felt him smile onto my head.
‘What?’ I asked.
‘I love the way your hair smells,’ he said, picking up a strand and twirling it.
I blushed.
‘Thanks.’ I pulled his head down and smelled his hair; it smelled of coconuts and almonds.
‘I love the smell of your hair too,’ I smiled shyly, realizing what I’d just said.
I suddenly realized how cold I was and saw the goose bumps rise on my arm. Niall noticed and put him arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. My heart fluttered at his touch and I put my arm around his back, leaning my head on his chest.
I fell asleep, I was aware of that, because he was stroking my head just as he had last night. I woke up on his lap, and the sun was overhead.
‘You’re beautiful when you sleep,’ He said, noticing my eyelids opening.
I tried hard to ignore the compliment. ‘How long was I gone?’ I asked.
‘About two hours,’ I looked at him with disbelief.
‘And you watched me sleep that whole time?’ I asked, sitting up.
‘I didn’t mind, like I said, you’re beautiful when you sleep.’
I blushed this time and got up to get going. We talked a lot less as we crossed the river and began walking along it to the eighteenth yard. I liked it that way, and he seemed happy too, just listening to the birds and the flow of the river.
We both came from a similar background, growing up in the countryside more or less. I only wish I had as many funny stories to tell him as he had for me.
We finally got to the road leading to my village.
‘You can leave me here if you like, I know my way from here.’ I said, turning to face him.
‘Will I see you again?’ he asked seriously. I honestly didn’t know how to reply. I wanted to, my heart and my head knew that. But there was still that sensible, hurt part of me that said ‘He’ll leave you one day Cal and you know that.’
‘If we’re meant to we will,’ I smiled, voicing my thoughts. There was no point in keeping it in, it’s what I thought and I was gonna say it.
He looked disappointed with my answer. So I decided a push in the right direction with fate might not hurt.
‘I’ll be at the park with my friend tomorrow night,’ I said, touching his arm. ‘The one behind the pub we went to.’
He smiled at the memory of last night, and I was glad to make him smile. It broke my heart to see him sad.
‘Does that mean you want to see me again?’ he asked, serious still but with a smirk.
‘I’d be stupid not to.’ I answered, thinking I wasn’t totally disobeying my mind.
He leant down and kissed my cheek, keeping it there for a few seconds. I blushed and hugged him tightly, feeling his breath in my hair.
‘Bye,’ I said, sadly as I walked down the road.
‘Cal!’ He called as I was almost round the corner. I turned back.
‘Have I told you how beautiful you are?’ I laughed and looked at me feet, turning and walking again. I didn’t stop smiling until I got home.
