From a Kota's girl to another, I made a little something with you in mind. Thank you!

“Hey, you ready?”

I turned to the door, clutching the straps of my halter top dress, as soon as I heard footsteps outside.

“Mom said we should get going soo-”

Kota emerged from the doorway, one of his hands grasping the door knob and the other holding a cell phone to his ear. He froze to the spot, eyeing me carefully from head to toe.

I could hear someone talking on the other line, wondering why Kota hadn’t been answering for the past couple of seconds. Crossing across the room to where he stood, I gently pried the cell phone off his hand, then walked towards the other end of the room where a full mirror had been temporarily placed and answered in his stead.

“Sang here. No, Kota’s---”

It was my turn to look back at him and eye him. He looked dashing in his black coat with his hair combed neatly to the side.

“He’s fine.”

I noted how the bow tie I gave him last Christmas had looked cute on him. Upon hearing my voice and probably from the way I checked him out just now, his cheeks tinted a slight pink as he snapped back to his senses and looked everywhere but me. I gestured for him to close the door as I talked to North about how we were about done, and reassuring him once more that Kota’s fine.

Before hanging up, I chuckled, hearing Luke on the other line correctly guess why Kota hadn't responded about a minute ago.

I placed the cell phone down on his bed stand then stood in front of the full length mirror once more. I caught Kota looking at me through the mirror and this time he stared back. We both cracked sheepish smiles upon seeing one another through the mirror.

Swaying the loose straps of the dress from behind my neck, I asked him, “Do you mind helping me with this?”

Without a word, he made his way to me and stood behind me. I clutched the front of the dress with one arm across my chest, pressing it on my body a little as I let him take the straps from my other hand. I watched him as his fingers worked quietly, tying the knot and the ribbon securely and properly.

“Perfect,” he whispered just as he finished with the task, looking at his work then right at me through my reflection.

He broke out into a grin as he saw me blush in response.

“You’re beautiful, Sang,” he said,  wrapping his arms around my waist, then giving the side of my head a quick peck.

I loosened his hold on me and turned to face him. “You are,” I said, almost breathless, and  tiptoed to kiss him square on the lips.

In that moment, I felt that we were both cherishing this time by ourselves. The two of us hadn’t been alone like this in a long time.

For a while, his bedroom seemed the quietest and most peaceful of all places. It was just the two of us and it felt too good to be true.

It was.

We both pulled apart, chuckling, as we heard loud footsteps stomping back down the stairs with Jessica hollering, “Mom! I think they’re ready except Kota is kissing on Sang again! Why do I have to keep checking on them and keep catching them like that? I swear if this isn’t a the curse of a younger sister or something...”

And as if on cue, with Jessica going at it again, starting her 3-minute speech about spending almost a decade of catching her brother and his girlfriend locking lips, Kota dipped his head back down, his lips finding mine once more.

“Jessica, curse or no curse, put on your heels, yes, heels, and get your butt in the car, or risk spending the 40-minute ride with your brother and his girlfriend in his car.” Erica’s loud commanding voice reached us, making us pull back, chuckling one more time. “And don’t make me come up there, you two. We are not going to be late to this wedding, are we?”

“No, Ma’am!” Kota and I answered in unison, smiling as we fixed each other’s appearance.

“You know how extremely stressed your cousin becomes when it comes to seeing family late to an occasion. And it’s her wedding today!”

I pictured a beautiful garden wedding as Erica talked.

Kota replied, “We’ll be down in a second, Mom!”

“You better! Or else Sang’s gonna miss the throwing of the bouquet again, and then there’s not going to be a wedding. I’m not getting younger by the second. I can’t have grandkids when I can barely get up at night and get to the bathroom, now, can I?”

“We get it, Mom! Just a second! Just grabbing her purse...” Kota sent me a sheepish smile while he did fetch my purse from the bed.

Talks of weddings were becoming more frequent lately and I felt more wary of each of the boys’ preference.

For a moment, before we descended from his old bedroom, he paused in his tracks. He gently took my hand and caressed whichever finger or knuckle his thumb could reach. He looked down on our hands and said, “The two of us…” He trailed off, pausing as he swiped his thumb over my ring finger. “Maybe one day, right?” He asked, looking straight at me.

I was speechless as I realized what he was hinting at.

He simply smiled, careful not to push the topic and moved down a step.

With our hands still together, I pulled and nudged him back, making him face me at eye level. Then I put my arms around him, clutching at everything and all that he is. And I said, “Yes.”
