Chapter Nineteen – The Beginning of the End
"I THINK WE SHOULD BREAK UP," I said.
Parker, Holden and I were all holed up in their 'private study room' anticipating physics class. The cafeteria was temporarily closed following an unexpected gas leak. Elaine had opted to take a day off school without informing me – the traitor – leaving me to fend for myself.
"Why?" Holden asked, looking up from his laptop. "I thought it was going well."
"The spark just isn't there anymore," I joked.
"Relationships are hard work young one. It isn't just a spark," Parker said, hurling a dart at the board.
"That's rich coming from you," Holden laughed. "Anyway, I thought it was going well. I'm having fun at least."
"Glad to hear it, but I don't think I'm getting an Oscar for this. Also, everyone is acting so weird around me."
"Logan's stopped bothering you, hasn't he? No walkabout clothes?"
"Pretty much." I paused. "Oh right, almost forgot...the whole DNA thing," I said sarcastically.
"Technically that's not really a you problem, but a me problem, but ok. We can break up in a week's time," he said nonchalantly. "Before then, a few of the families from Pemberton have a fundraising dinner. I can't possibly go stag to that."
"Fine." I agreed.
We were on our way to physics when Holden dropped his wallet. Just before he managed to pick it up, I spotted the strip of photobooth photos of him and Allie that had been folded up.

Logan
Logan ticked the box for express processing and shipping which would set him back an extra fifty dollars. He put the form and two samples into the envelope and sealed it.
"Do you need me to post this for you?" Mrs Foggarty, his housekeeper, asked.
"No, that's fine. I'll take this one myself," he replied, tucking the envelope into his jacket pocket.
Just as he was walking towards the door, it opened. His father pushed his way through with a briefcase so full the loose papers threatened to escape. "Dad, you're home early," Logan remarked, pushing the envelope deeper into his pocket, a pang of guilt hitting his chest.
"I practically fought tooth and nail to get home early tonight. It is your birthday after all!" He exclaimed. "Your mum and Haley should be home in half an hour, then we can all go out for dinner," he grinned.
"Sounds good," Logan smiled. "I just have to go do something. I'll be back before then though."
The family portrait hung proudly above the fireplace. There was him, his mum, his dad and his younger sister Haley. It was even clearer when looking at the photo. He had the vividly bright blue eyes. His mum's eyes were a darker blue while both his dad's and sister's were brown.
The chances that he had ended up with those bright blue eyes was possible, but for generations on his dad's side, they had all had brown eyes. After human bio, he'd had questions, but it was the photo from an old fundraiser that caught his eye.
--
"So what's the deal with the fundraising dinner?" I asked Parker was we left physics class.
"It's sort of a gala that my family hosts every year. It's basically an excuse for everyone to dress up and show everyone else that they're richer and their kids are better," he said cynically.
"It's good fun," Holden grinned. "Besides, it's very exclusive so even only a few families from Pemberton attend. It makes the paper every year though."
"O-kay...so which part of all that made you think it'd be appropriate for me to attend?"
"Simple. It's 'cause you're my girlfriend. Don't worry, I won't let the high society vultures get their claws into you," Holden winked.
"Gee thanks."
--
It was a few days out from the fundraising dinner when Holden gave me my invitation. Daisy Sorenson was printed on the fancy paper in gold calligraphy-like writing. All Holden had said was to 'wear something nice'. 'Nice' could mean anything from a cute summer dress to a full-length ball gown.
I googled 'Lennox fundraising dinner'. Most of the results popping up were news articles about the Lennox Fundraising Gala. I opened up the images section to see photos of the attendees. The first image was one of Parker's family. His mum was in a deep emerald green floor length gown, both he and his dad wore black suits, but his dad's tie was emerald green while Parker's was black.
It was fancy. I skimmed a few other photos before deciding that the consensus was extremely fancy. Stephanie, Holden, Logan, Elaine, Clarissa, Wesley and a few others I recognized from Pemberton were in some photos.
I might've scored a ticket, but I had nothing to wear. I texted Elaine to find out what she was wearing. She replied almost instantly with a photo. Her message read: maybe this?
It was a red, fitted deep v-neck dress. Very Elaine. Also very nice.Holden had spent the previous days convincing me that it would be easy to find something to wear and that it was no big deal, but I'd even stumbled upon a blog that critiqued everyone's outfits and ultimately named Stephanie as best dressed.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. I went to the door to find a courier outside. "I have a package for Daisy Sorenson," he said.
"That's me," I replied. I hadn't ordered anything in recent memory. What could the box be?
"I'll just get you to sign here," he replied, handing me the little handheld thing where I signed my name.
He handed me the rectangular black box wrapped in a neat red bow. "Thank you," I said as I received it. I took the box back to my room before undoing the bow. The black wrapping came off it to reveal a glossy black box. I opened the lid. Inside was a navy blue folded dress. It was an off shoulder floor length gown with a slit than ran up the left side.
A cream coloured card fell to the ground as I held the dress up to look at it more closely. Attached to it was a cheque for $1000. The writing on the card read:
I thought it was time I repay my debt + interest.
