Nathan came to pick me up from my place. His face scrunched and glaring at me as I jumped inside.

"So are you going to keep your face that way or...?"
"I just can't believe him."
"Really Nathan. This has been what I've dealt with for my whole life. I told you nothing is going to change."
"You sure work like you feel it might."
"Isn't hope sometimes cruel."
"Forget about him we are going to get you a license."

He sped off in his jeep. I know Nathan sees how I do more than necessary to impress my dad. I know he tells me how I could stop working so much harder than I do but I can't stop myself. My subconscious keeps insisting I have a chance with my dad.

I get to the DMV a crowd around the corner for all the people without appointments. A wave of relief overcomes me as I confidently go up to the person to check me in just to converge me to get in the second line with the rest of the others. Soon enough it was my turn.
The instructor was a large, bald, dark-skinned man that towered over me as he approached me.

"Hello, I am Sonny. I'll be your instructor for the day."

His voice was deep yet cheery and I had the urge to laugh but I held it in. "Hi nice to meet you."
"Let's get started."
Sonny was an interesting character nothing on the inside matched his outside exterior. He was kind, funny, and very laid back. So much so even though I could barely parallel park and went a little too fast down a street he cut the test early and congratulated me on passing on my first try.
"So JD remember to just be safe on the road. I sense your a good kid. Don't worry you'll eventually be an even better driver."
"Thanks!"

I got in Nathan's car as he kept his head straight at the dash and waited for my reaction.
"Well..."
"Passed!" I shoved my temporary license in his face. He snatched it out my hand and placed it in the inner counsel.
"Perfect. Now you drive yourself home." He tossed me the keys and I jumped out to switche places.

It was a great feeling. Another accomplishment under my belt without any help from Carter. I keep proving to myself how I don't need him. Why can't I just move on from wanting his approval?

Carter was sleep on the couch. Then there was Emma.
"Hey JD."
Her voice always made me cringe she was no good. I wish she never met my dad. Sometimes I believe if it wasn't for her I would have a chance with my dad.
"You know..."
She stood up from the kitchen table and blocked me from getting passed her.
"Ever since you turned 16 something is different about you." Her pointed black nails brushed my face. I could still smell the fresh polish. Wow a nail appointment was more important than getting my license. She then shoved herself closer towards me.

"It can't be much different I was only 15 just 2 days ago." I ducked to maneuver around her. Everytime I came home both of them was a strong reminder about how badly I needed to get out of that house.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
School. Yes, school was sadly the place I wanted to be instead of that house. Well, that or Nathan's place.
"JD, when are you planning on taking your own ride to school?"
"Once I get my imaginary money and go to the imaginary dealer to..."
"Alright alright I get it no car soon."
"Actually maybe a car soon."
He leaned in closer and grabbed a fry from Nathan's plate as he continued. "I am going to start working for Mr. Andrew."
His eyes widened followed by a slight head tilt. I laughed inside reminding me of his dog when he looks confused. "Yes I said Mr. Andrew the guy with the car shop. We made an arrangement that I could work up to owning and fixing up one of the cars he has on the lot."
"Well I hope it all works out for you man." He brought his cola can to his mouth savoring the last bit of our lunch break.
Nathan dropped me off at work. Mr. Andrew had me work until 6 pm and I walked home. I did my best to quietly come in the house. There she was sitting on my bed. Her eyes crazed and stalking me as if I was her prey.
"You need to leave Emma. Now!"
"You know James I have been thinking."
"Oh yeah. Not too hard I hope." I backed up as she slowly came towards me. My once sacred space was defiled by the one person that loathed me more than my own dad which I almost thought wasn't possible.
"Your are so funny James. I just wanted to spend some time together. It was time I gave you a chance."

Heeyy Emma I am home. Is the boy here yet because I thought we could have some time alone before he does.

She paused with her hand on my shoulder. "We will have to finish this conversation later." She quickly scurried out of my room. I was perplexed by her 360 change of attitude and knew she had alternative plans.  Nothing was black and white with her. She always had a plan and it always went her way. Unfortunately, I somehow become intertwined in her latest plot.
