“Yeah, fuck that. Tell Harry he can go—”

“Hey…stop it. He was just trying to help…” I defended Harry even though I had just been venting about how angry I was at him with Will as we sat in the car outside Dad’s new house.

“Well he doesn’t know shit.” Will coughed as he took a hit from the small glass bowl. I took it from him and lit the end, inhaling the smoke.

“His parents are divorced too, ya know.” I countered.

“Yeah, but did one of them cheat?”

“Erm—I don’t know actually…but I know that I definitely do not want to see Mum. How have you been acting towards her?”

“I don’t really talk to her. She tries to like…hug me and shit and apologize but I just don’t care.”

“I feel like it’d be slightly different had it only happened once, but the fact that she’s done it again and again and again is fucking sickening.” I took another hit before continuing, “Does she actually think we’re going to just forgive her? Is she fucking mad?”

“You’re preachin’ to the choir, sis.” He took the bowl back from me and lit the last bit of the weed that was left.

“Why did we think this was a good idea?” I began to laugh as he put the bowl inside the middle console of his car.

“Why isn’t it a good idea? There’s never not a good time to get high.” The only time I ever got high was when I was with Will. Being only a year and a half apart, we got on really well, and we always had similar interests, for example, marijuana.

“You make a valid point.” I wiggled my eyebrows and pulled my coat closer against my body, preparing to embrace the frigid air outside of the car.

“I hope he made good food.” Will mumbled and I giggled, our highs were surely kicking in.

“Any food is good food, William.” Just as we neared the courtyard, the door swung open and Dad’s happy grin greeted us.

“Am I that bad?” He asked as I threw my arms around his shoulders. “Where you have to get high before seeing me?” He put me down and tossed an arm around Will’s shoulders, while I latched onto his free side, the three of us making our way into the surprisingly cozy and well decorated home.

“No, but food is better high, we had to be prepared for your cooking, old man.” I giggled against him and his deep chuckle made me want to burst into tears. I had missed him, terribly.

“Well, I’ve never heard a truer statement.”

“I’ve got a quarter left…?” Will draped the bag back and forth in front of Dad’s face and after a few seconds of pondering, a vibrant smirk played on his face.

“Your mum would have my head—” He must’ve realized that he’d just mentioned the horrible, awful, despicable excuse for a woman because he stopped talking and the room grew silent.

“You know what, Dad? Fuck her.”

“Tessa!”

“No, I mean it! Mum can drop dead.”

“That’s a little harsh, don’t you think, Tessa?” Will asked me while Dad sighed, leaning against the counter.

“You’re Mum made a mistake. We all make mistakes—”

“Really Dad?! Really?!” I glanced back and forth at both of them to see if I was being Punk’d or something. “A mistake is a one time occurrence. Mum cheated on you over and over again! How can you actually defend her right now?!”

“I’m not saying what she did was right—hell, I’m not defending her! Truth be told, I can’t ever see myself forgiving her, not anytime soon, at least. I’m just saying that regardless of what she’s done, she is still your Mum and she loves you.”

“Well, I don’t really give a shit. And to be honest, I’d really rather not speak to her right now—and I won’t. I’m not going to. Not for a long fucking time.” The two of them were silent for a few seconds before my Dad nodded and stepped towards me with his arms outstretched. I hesitantly accepted his embrace, and he kissed my head.

“I love you so much, Tessie—but I want you to know that I’m going to be okay, okay?” I pulled away and glanced up at him.

“I know you are.”

“Are we gonna smoke this or what?” Will asked, holding up the plastic baggie.

“Ahhh what the hell.” Will gave me a knowing smirk as the three of us headed towards the garage.
