Fish are one of the most popular pets to own, and here's why. The Carassius auratus also known as the Goldfish has a long history that leads back to their ancestors, carps. Carps are from east Asia and unlike the modern Goldfish they were not domesticated. The Carp was actually one of the most famous fish eaten in China at one point. The common Goldfish is bred from a carp, and are typically kept as display fishes in aquariums or ponds. They are freshwater fishes who are very hardy and are usually recommended for beginners. Although, due to how big they get they are not always the easiest to keep in the long run.

Like their ancestors they get big, fast. The common Goldfish grows up to fourteen inches in length when given the right resources. Not only do they grow big, but also have a long life span. Expected to live twenty-five years, and yet the longest recorded goldfish lived to be forty-three years old. The care given will reflect the length and lifespan of a fish. Chances are if kept in a bowl with no filter the fish will not grow properly, and die faster.
