I still didn't know where I was. How did this happen? Did I do something wrong?
The clouds of dust were settling in. There were ashes everywhere.
The shock of what I saw astounded me. I felt the world swirling around me.
No. Snap out of it.
I was going to get to the bottom of this no matter how long it took me. I peeked around at my surroundings and tried to remember. I need to try to start off plain and simple.
Name...What was my name?
Then it happened again, very similar to the first time. The edges of my eyes started to go black, and then I was engulfed in the nothingness.
I was about 10 years old, and my mom was brushing my hair.
"Do you know what is so special about your name?"
She stops the brush midway, takes it out of my hair, and sets it down. My mom faces towards me.
"Your name was picked out especially by your father and I. We thought of it because we thought of you as a gift from heaven. That's how you got your name, Nevaeh."
I woke with a start. I knew my name was Nevaeh, and that the sky is normally not this color.
Maybe I should check my surroundings just a little bit better. I stumbled up, then instantly slumped back down again. Unbearable pain shot through my back. Right at that moment, I wished I could just let the pain overcome me, and end this life. But I pushed that thought out of my mind as the pain subsided momentarily. Just push forward, Just push forward, I strained as I shoved myself back up.
Finally stumbling to my feet, I glanced around and immediately remembered why I had passed out the first time. There were burned buildings, and bodies, everywhere. There was still some fire burning in the distance, about to crackle out. As horrifying as it was, I had to look at the people. Were there any I knew?
