"He is coming in the clouds and every eye will see him." Revelation 1:7
He, Who Leads The Way
Macey
I woke at dawn, listening quietly to the whimpers of Elda's dreams. Her little lips curled into a frown and she silently wept while she slept. My heart beat rose in my throat as nausea overwhelmed me, my anxiety holding like a wretched curse. I sat straight up in my seat, the realization that our car was stopped shocking through my body. I looked around and noticed Abraham and Will weren't with us.
My ears flexed as I heard rustling outside of the cracked window. My hand fell instinctively to my waist but my pistol was gone. A stream of curses flew from my mouth as I reached under the seat, praying to find anything I could use to protect us. I came up empty handed, the noise creeping closer as I cowered into the crook between the front and middle seats. The door flew open, sun warming the inside of the crisp suburban, my legs curled up to my chest before I jutted forward, throwing my feet into the air. Wills hand grabbed my ankle as he turned to the side, barely missing my shoe.
"Easy, killer. It's just me." His hand dropped to my calf. "You gonna kick me again?" He chuckled.
"I don't know, it depends on what you say to my next question." His brows raised in curiosity. "Where are we?"
"Oklahoma." He reached for my hand to help me unstick myself from the seats. "You hungry?" He smiled.
"Starving." I giggled.
"Good." He smiled, handing me an MRE. "This should handle that." I rolled my eyes and ripped open the pouch, digging my plastic fork into the so-called lasagna. "Good?" He asked, his brow lifting inquisitively.
"This tastes like shit, but I'm so hungry I'd eat my hand." I giggled and snorted, my eyes closing as the food rolled in my mouth. I looked to my side as Abraham walked slowly, his head down and his mouth mumbling. "What's he up to?" I asked, nodding in Abraham's direction.
"No clue. Not my business. As long as he doesn't get us killed, ain't mine." Will huffed, staring at Abraham as he paced around the suburban. "Besides, he saved our ass back there by warning us they were coming. I gotta give him credit."
"Something about him seems super sketchy to me." I chuckle, slightly annoyed by Will's naivety. He's always been one to always see the good. Always looking for the silver lining. Even when his world crashes down, he sees the lesson. I've always admired that about people like him.
"Eh, so he's got a few screws loose. Frankly, I like him.." He looks at me with a half-smirk and a look in his eyes I've never seen before.
"Glad to know." Abraham surprised both of us by walking up behind us, his voice like gravel.
"What were you muttering about?" I ask, my tone slightly curt.
"How we're going to break into Allistor's ranch and finish the job. Maybe off his sadistic fiance, too." Abe's voice was a slight chuckle but will and I failed to see the humor. We shared a glance before continuing.
"Allistor's dead, you said so yourself." Will cut.
"Ah, but, he's not. Something feels off. Ever since Serena left, they've been keeping his so-called-death very hushed. Something's not right and, if I were a betting man, I would say the odds are in my favor that I'm right." Abe lifted a flask to his lips before gesturing to both of us for a pull.
"Oh, fuck it." I said, bringing the flask up and pouring the warm whiskey into my mouth. I've always loved whiskey, but, frankly, the whiskey in this flask was the shittiest whiskey I'd ever tasted in my life. Still, I took a second pull before handing the flask to Will who shook his head in refusal.
