Your eyes widen at the scene that played out before you. You could have sworn your heart stopped when you saw a bullet went through your twin brother's heart. He had just shielded you from the enemy. "Hi...Hikaru!" you shouted and ran towards him, hoping to catch him.
In just a few seconds after Hikaru was shot, the culprit was slashed by your comrade, Katsura. Blood splattered everywhere before the body fell onto the ground. "Zu..Zura...," You were surprised to see Zura lurking near you and Hikaru's assigned war ground.
Katsura was supposed to be at the west gate fighting along with Gintoki. The Shiroyasha said he could handle it alone and forced him to help out the twins. He balled his fist, he should have arrived earlier. "I will handle the situation here," He said, slashing every Amanto that neared both you and Hikaru.
You nodded, and quickly tore the sleeve of your yukata and pressed it on Hikaru's bleeding wound. His body trembled in pain as he gasped for air.
"Die!"
Katsura's eyes went wide in surprise and fear. An enemy just managed to pass him and headed towards the twins. He wanted to run towards the twins but a number of Amanto started to surround him.
You stared at the beast who was coming towards both of you. You felt your body was rooted on the ground in fear as you could only stare the beast coming closer to you every second. You shielded Hikaru with your form and shut your eyes tightly and braced for the impact.
A loud screech from the beast caused your muscles to relax a little. As soon as your eyes were open, blood splattered on to yours' and Hikaru's form. The beast yelled curses in agony before dropped onto the uneven ground. "Tch," the savior clicked his tongue before backing up Katsura who was in need of help.
"Don't let your guard down!"
"Ta-takasugi..."
He immediately came with Tatsuma after he finished his business at the Eastern Gate. He did not expect the area where the twins were assigned to were troublesome than the rest. The enemy here all had modern weapons which caused a huge disadvantage to the them - samurais. He was glad he could make it in time.
Hikaru forced his heavy eyelids to flutter open, revealing his darken blue orbs. His vision was blurred, he could no longer feel pain. "Ka...Kaoru...?" Feeling wet droplets gently fell onto his face, he knew you were crying. "You will be okay...you will be okay..." He could hear you muttered repeatedly while holding his hand.
He slowly raised his hand to cup your cheek and wiped the tears away with his thumb. The peaceful lives they once had changed; ever since Shouyou's death. As he thought about Shouyou-sensei whom he thought as a father, Gintoki, Katsura, Takasugi whom he thought as brothers and you, he felt his heart ached. He could feel his tears cascading down. Ah... how he wished to return to the past and enjoy those days. He wanted to return home with everyone and hoping Shouyou would once again appeared before them.
"Promise me that you will live..." he said with a weak smile. "It will be okay, Hikaru." you said, ignoring his words. He managed to whispered your name one last time before his hand went limp and fell to his side. You blinked the tears away that obstructed your vision.
"Hika-Hikaru...?"
More tears came as a sob could be heard. You refused to accept his fate. The battlefield was silent, all the Amanto that were stationed at the Northern gate were eliminated. Though the Joui had gained victory, they could not bring themselves celebrate it. Another member died. Katsura had a pained expression as he tried to look away from his friend. Takasugi balled his trembling fist. Another important person of his had left this world. He swore he was going to destroy everything and avenge everyone.
"This is my fault... my fault..." you chanted absentmindedly. You could have pushed him away before the bullet could reach him. "This is not your fault," Katsura said. It pained him to see you blaming yourself. However, his voice did not reach you. Your attention only focused on Hikaru.
"Kaoru,"
This time, the voice was not Katsura's. You ignored the man's calling and mumbled incoherent words. The silver haired man frowned and lowered his head, he knew that words alone was not enough to calm you down nor bring Hikaru back to life. Again, he called you out loud enough to be heard by other joui members who were nearby. His voice still could not reach you.
He lets out a sigh of defeat and annoyance. He walked towards you and yanked you up from the ground, separating you from Hikaru's lifeless body. His large hand cupped the back of your head, pressing your face into his chest. "Gin...it is my fault...it is my fault,"
Gintoki stroked the back of your head, hoping to comfort you. Your small form was trembling in his arms. "Enough... you know it was not your fault." Gintoki whispered, feeling your trembling arms wrapped around him, clinging desperately to him. Warm tears came faster and faster as you sobbed.
