THE ROUND SUN hung low, kissing the land with its merciful rays, painting orange hues across the town. The harsh wind bid its farewell and the villages were still once again. The touch of the soft breeze and the fuzzy warmth welcomed each family, repairing their minds and hearts. The Queen's people felt safe—at the moment—and content.

All, except her daughter.

The Royal Witch
CHAPTER FIVE

SERAPHINA'S PALE fingers clawed through her upset, tangled black locks. She threw her head back and groaned, her mind a whirlwind, a daze. Tearing her eyes away from the setting sun, she straightened her shoulders and pursed her lips. With one last deep breath, she stomped out of her chambers, making her way to the throne room.

Muffled and hushed voices were drifting out through the door. She tried to step forward but two guards blocked her pathway.

"Let me through."

"Queen's orders," said one guard, looking straight ahead and refusing to meet her gaze.

Seraphina huffed in response. "I order you to let me through." She glared at them. "Princess' orders. Unless you want to be removed."

The guards blinked and respectfully stepped aside. Forcefully, she swung open the door, revealing herself. Evanora and Jonathan whipped their heads around, their eyes meeting a pair of furious, blazing green ones. A handful of knights and royal advisors surrounding the round table looked up, their faces hiding any sign of emotion. Nervously, Jonathan scratched the back of his neck, whereas Evanora gasped, anger and impatience spreading through her.

"No," Seraphina deadpanned, glaring at her mother. "Do not shut me out. I know there is something strange going on and I want to know what it is." She turned on her uncle. "Uncle John, you weren't supposed to be back for another two months. Where are the other knights? Why are you alone?" She turned on her mother. "Mother, why are you dealing with weapons? What are you gathering together? What is happening?"

Silence.

The only audible sound were the gulps of air being swallowed by Seraphina, still glaring at the last remainder of her family. Defeatedly, Evanora sighed and gestured for the guards to open the door.

"Leave," said Evanora, "everybody leave. We will pick this up later."

Nicklaus, a royal advisor with very little patience, frustratedly sighed. "My queen, we have not yet finished. There is more to discuss and very little time."

Evanora inhaled a shallow breath. "Return in twenty minutes. All of you."

The knights nodded, marching out of the room. The rest of them murmured under their breath, before bowing and leaving the room. Seraphina stood at the doorway, her feet glued to the spot, ignoring the looks that were being flung at her.
