The book of Joshua and the book of Ephesians in the Bible both teach on the Spiritual War and the three different parts of the Spiritual War. First how we should prepare for the war. Second The Bible teaches us how we need to fight using the authority we have received. Finally, the things we receive after the war through God.
Spiritual War is very important because as Paul wrights in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” our fight is against Satan and his demonic powers. The book of Joshua and the book of Ephesians teach us to prepare before we enter into Spiritual war. In Joshua chapter 3 we see Joshua and the Israelites early in the morning preparing for war. In the spiritual realm, this also applies to us. We need to prepare ourselves before a war. Joshua and Paul both teach us on how to prepare for war. God tells us to not be afraid in Joshua 1:9 and to be strong and courageous in Joshua 1:6-7. In the book of Ephesians Paul tells us of the armor of God that we need to wear for the war. Paul tells us to wear the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel, the helmet of salvation, the shield of faith, and finally the sword of the Spirit in Ephesians 6:10-18. In the book of Joshua God also tell Joshua that he will not accompany them during the war unless they get rid of all the sin they have (Joshua 7:11-12). If we enter into a spiritual war without God we will not have victory, this is why we have to get rid of any sin we have before the war.
Joshua was known for the many victories he had in war, however, Joshua only won the battles through God. In the book of Ephesians and the book of Joshua, we are taught how to fight all of our Spiritual wars. In Joshua chapter 6 we see the walls of Jericho fall and the Israelite army destroy all of Jericho. In this war, we learn a Biblical principle of Spiritual war, The Israelite army walked in silence for 6 days around the walls of Jericho once a day. On the 7th day, they walked around 7 times behind 7 priests playing trumpets. On the 7th time around The people shouted and the walls of Jericho fell, allowing the army to run in and take the city. The Biblical principle we learn here is to praise God for the victory before we enter the battle as did Joshua and the Israelite army. In Joshua chapter 2 we see the people of Jericho knew of the promise God gave Joshua and were afraid of the destruction that would fall on them. This shows our enemy fears us in battle. This also parallels the authority and dominion of God over everything which is mentioned in Ephesians 1:19-23. This authority is ours to use, God gives us his authority so we can use it in battle. We see Joshua use this authority in Joshua 10:12-15 were he speaks to the sun and to the moon to stand still, and they do. If we fight our Spiritual wars like Joshua and Paul teach us in the books of Ephesians and of Joshua we will win all wars through God as promised in Joshua 23:9-10, “The Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised.”
After the war is finished we receive many blessings as seen through the books of Joshua and Ephesians. However, it is crucial to understand that any victory comes from God, not our own hands. The blessing we receive remind us to keep fighting for them because if we become submissive satan will take them away from us. Joshua received many blessings from his wars. In the spiritual realm, he received many promises from God the promise in Joshua 1:3, “I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”, The promise of God protecting us from anything in Joshua 1:5, “ No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” In the physical realm, Joshua conquered 31 kingdoms as seen in Joshua 12:24. Joshua 10:42 "All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel." Joshua was not the only one who received the blessings from war. Caleb waited 45 years for his blessing and in Joshua 14:6-15 he receives the promise God made to him. The Israelites were also blessed by God, “ Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” In the book of Ephesians Paul also wrights of the blessings that come from God, that are received from Spiritual war. In Ephesians 1:17-18, I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,” we see the blessings of wisdom, revelation, and of the Holy Spirit. Both the book of Joshua and the book of Ephesians mention the many spiritual and physical blessings we receive from God, however Ephesians 2:8-10, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” reminds us that all we receive is not from our hard work, but from what God has done and given out of his grace and love for us.
The book of Ephesians and the book of Joshua both teach on Biblical principles of Spiritual war. The two books also teach on the three parts of Spiritual war, how to prepare, how to fight, and the blessings we receive. Both books teach us how to be men and women of spiritual war and to receive the blessings from God.
