The red haired girl looked at the newly matched couple softly. Her emerald eyes held sadness in them as she watched the boy nuzzle the girl's nose before pecking her lips.
Her heart clenched with hurt. She wished she was the girl.
But then, something caught her eye. The boy's smile.
It was the genuine, wide smile that made small, adorable wrinkles appear in the corner of his eyes as he picked up the girl and spun her around. And then-
Then, for some reason, pain released her chest from its deathly clutch. Something else filled its place in her fragile heart. Something light and warm. Relief.
"Callie, my sweet! How are you doing?"
Calista almost jumped out of her own skin when she heard her best friend's voice near her ear. She turned around and glared at the tanned skin cupid, his dark eyes glinting with mischief.
Caspian has been her friend for over 250 years, her partner and the only person who knew everything about her, including embarrassing feelings she developed for a human she's been assigned to match.
"I'm fine," Calista muttered, looking at the ground and biting her bottom lip.
Caspian sighed and wrapped his arms around her "You know what they say, there's nothing more powerful or sadi-"
But before he could finish Calista fiercly pushed him away from herself and took a step back.
"Don't say it!" she hissed, some of dark red locks falling on her face when she pulled away.
"It's not true" it was an almost audible whisper.
Caspian crossed arms over his chest and rose one of his dark eyebrows. "And how so?"
Calista let out a long sigh as she looked back at the couple "It is definitely not sadistic."
A small smile appeared on her face.
"Love is... harmless. It can't hurt. Our fear of our loved ones leaving us hurts. Rejection hurts. Obsession hurts. Staying alone hurts. But true love... no, it never hurts."
Caspian's eyes softened as she continued her little rant.
"Besides, I'd describe love as a need to make the one we love happy. And even if are not the reason for their happiness, even if we can't be with them, their happiness can ease our pain of rejection. Their happiness makes us happy" she looked back at her friend, smile on her face making small dimple in her right cheek appear.
"Yeah... you're right" he pulled her back into a hug and kissed her temple. "Happy cupid day!"
Calista looked up at Caspian as if he lost his mind "Since when do you celebrate one of the original brothers?"
Caspian let out a throaty laugh "I don't celebrate him. Isn't Valentine's day actually lovers' day? And who matches people? Raise your hand if you do."
Small smile toyed at his lips as he raised his hand and his best friend mimicked him, her lip twitching.
"And what are we?"
"Okay, okay, I get it" she laughed and raised both of her hands in surrender.
Caspian grinned. "You gotta admit we deserve a day for ourselves, we work hard all year!" he fake whined.
"I suppose you're right" Calista shook her head, amusement clear in her emerald orbs.
"So, wanna get a drink in our honour?" he winked, wrapping arm around her shoulders. "Cal can't get that mad for an hour long procrastination."
"Have you met Cal?"
Caspian just shrugged, his grin widening. "So?"
"Let's go."
