Four Years Ago

"Knock 'em dead babe," Brendan says, handing me my helmet. "Like always," I smile up at him. He wraps his arms around my shoulders. "You know, if you get yourself killed, I'm gonna have to kill ya," he says. "Oh, well then, I'll have to try not to get killed," we both laugh. He leans down and kisses me. "Okay. I've got to get going. I love you," I say, pulling down the roll cage, as he walks over to the crew."Hailey! You ready to go? Let's do this!" Chris yells eagerly. "Hell yeah!" I fist bump him. "Alright. Word is, Dolan, the rookie from Horizon Fest, is suuuuper aggressive. He'll slingshot past you, or stay right on your ass the whole race, then pass you right at the finish. I've watched some of his races. He slams some of his opponents into the wall. And be extra careful, because if he thinks you're a man, he's going to go extra hard. Just be careful Hails. It's not just you and Brendan anymore," he said knowingly. "Chris, I know. She did pop out of me, you realize, "I laugh, securing my ear piece. "And Chris," I say, taping the microphone to my face. "What?" he puts his hands on his hips. "I'll be fine," I say, pulling the helmet over my head. He chuckles. "I know," he says, and I crawl in. "Alright, alright, testing testing," I hear Jim, the crew manager's voice coming through the mic. "All clear on the end of Michael Scott," I say. "1,2,1,2 this is Joe Dirt over and out," Chris says, and i almost lose it because of his Louisiana accent. "Brendan Urie here, we've got it covered," Brendan says, and I pull out of the garage and onto the track. It's not a big race, not in the least, but I don't lose. Like Ricky Bobby said, 'If you're not first, you're last,' and I think those are words to live by. Being in third place is difficult for me.

"DAMN IT!" I yell, as he pulls in front of me, right at the finish line. Just like Chris said he would. "What in the fuck!?!" I hit the steering wheel. "Calm down Hailey," Brendan says as I turn into the pit. "No, this is bullshit. Who does he think he is? I was about to win too. Christ, Lord baby Jesus help me," I yank down the cage and pull myself out. I stick the helmet on top of my car, and wipe my hair out of my face. It's humid in South Carolina, I learned, but I was used to humidity. I was born in Chattanooga, after all. I pull my lime green bandanna out of my pocket, and wipe the sweat away from my face. Then, I strip out of my fire retardant suit, revealing my Alpinestars undersuit. Brendan rushes over and brings me my bag. I storm past everyone on my way to the bathroom. Yes, I know I'm overreacting. But the heat makes me irritable. So does losing. I sigh, and lean my head against the cold tile wall. "Pull it together girl," I mutter to myself. I take a deep breath. I put on a yellow Mighty Mouse t-shirt, and a pair of black shorts. I brush out my hair, and put on my flip flops, then walk back outside. "Are you alright?" Brendan says, running over to me with Keira in his arms. "Hey baby," I coo, and take her from him. "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's go meet him, yeah?" I shift Keira on my hip. "Okay," he smiles, and we walk out to the small garage next door. "Hey," Brendan says, walking up to the man. He turns around, and is absolutely breathtaking. He smirks at the three of us. "Hello," he crosses his arms, rejecting Brendan's handshake. "I'm Brendan Castro, but on the track it's Garber- Scott. Nice race today," Brendan smiles. "Do you talk, or just stand behind your husband like "a good little wife"," he puts up air quotations, looking back at me . "You really want to hear me talk moth-"Hailey, Keira looks a little hot. Why don't you take her out to the car?" Brendan gestures. "I think you are perfectly capable of being a father for five minutes," I hand her to him. He sighs and walks out to our car. "Listen fucker, I know how jerks like you do. And it's not funny, so stay in your lane, alright?" I put my hands on my hips.

He chuckles. "And what are you going to do about it, little miss thang?" He steps closer to me
I laugh bitterly. "You have no idea yet," I say and our faces are almost touching. "Have a nice day, Hailey." He turns around and begins to walk away. "How did you know my name?" I yell towards him. He just throws up a peace sign and keeps walking. That bitch.
