I knew that Isla and Eli weren't my biological parents. Biologically, Eli was my brother. But it never stopped him from always treating me like I was his own.
I can barely remember my mother, but I knew that she didn't treat us right. I remember being terrified of her.
And then the apocalypse happened, and Eli took over as my parental figure. I was afraid to call him dad for the longest time, afraid that if I used that term that he would turn into the monster that our mother was.
Eventually, I got over my fear when I realized how much it meant to him, and he never changed. He and Isla were the best thing that had ever happened to me.
And then they told me I was going to be a big brother.
It was an odd concept to grasp at first. I was the younger brother, and suddenly I was going to be the eldest. As weird as it was, it also excited me.
And when Ember was born, in the midst of the most terrifying experience we had ever experienced. I felt like it was all worth it. She was so tiny, she fit perfectly in my own small arms.
I knew that we were going to be thicker than thieves.
And when we finally got to the island and I healed from the injuries I received as we made out way there, she followed me around everywhere I went. Her legs toddling behind me, desperate to keep up.
Dad and Mom both loved to watch her follow me, even with the worry stressed on their faces.
As Ember and I grew, other kids soon joined us. Victoria went from a squabbling baby to a kid who chased after Ember and I.
It was just us three until mom got pregnant with Aiden. I don't think I had ever seen dad as afraid as he was when we found out mom was pregnant again.
He was more scared than he was when we were separated from Mom and Ember.
But the moment Aiden was born, I know dads' heart was captured, just like Ember and my own was.
He looked exactly like mom.
His ginger curls and freckle splattered face had him looking like a replica to her, something that I know stole dads' heart as he grew.
But Aiden was always a quiet child, even when Wolfe and Amelia had another daughter, Amaya. Harry and Jaz even welcomed in a baby girl, Mako.
Out of the three of them, he was always the silent one, watching from the sidelines as he stuck close to our parents' side as Ember and I searched the island.
By the time I was 15, Ember and I had made it through the entire island, something that dad would have a fit about if he knew. Aiden was 6 at the time, and by then, we all knew something was wrong.
He got sick easily, his body failing him as it tried to ward off the illnesses. Mom and Dad would talk to the other adults, Ember and I hiding in the brush to listen in.
