Dead Tube
Prologue
Do you know what "DTube" is?"I think I've heard of it? The one where you post videos you take yourself"
"Yup, I heard that if you have a huge viewcount, you can earn a lot of money"Which type of footage do you think will generate the most viewcount?
"Right now it should be the emotional type? The type that makes you tear up!"
"Thinking of it, shouldn't it be comedy?"
"Ah, wouldn't dancing and singing yourself be it?"
"Hah, that kind of boring footage wouldn't make it. What else could it be..?"Then, if it were you, what kind of footage would you post?
"S-Stop.. Please, I'm really going to die..! Noooo-"
What makes the best, most exciting film? The big-name science fiction film made with the best technology available? The action film starring the best actor? Or the suspense-horror film made with care and skill by the most talented professionals?
But, in the end, isn't it all staged?
Chapter 1 – Action
A group of students sat in a circle on their swivelled back chairs, exchanging opinions in the 'Film Research Club' room. They always did say these types of topics are incredibly subjective, especially when it comes to what genre of film someone likes. A hopeless romantic for your average rom-com, or a horror fanatic, perhaps a sci-fi lover. Everyone fits into their role whether that's being an actor, director or a videographer – they all have individual expertise. Anything and everything is welcome, no matter the context. After all, it's just to put on a good and entertaining show, right?
"Biology stuff won't work, will it? Those reanimation types, those are really lame, aren't they?"
"Well, what do you want to do?"
"Shouldn't it be horror?"
"This again? You always just say it should be horror." Their squabbles and inflictions bounced off one another, until one decides to consult another student standing near to the wall, having not said a word yet. His video recorder sat idly in his hands as he looked down to it.
"Hey, as a videographer, what kind of film is the most exciting to make for you?" The boy looked up, almost surprised that the conversation was shifted to him.
"I.. Me? If it's me, then..-" His words were cut off by a girl briskly walking up to him from the door, almost seeming to have a shy demeanour around him. He turned his head to her, with her bright red uniform jacket being the main thing he focuses on first.
"Ma.. Machiya-senpai, someone's calling for you!"
".. Who?"
"A girl outside-"
"-Huh? A girl..?" This seemed a little puzzling to Machiya, considering he never really talked to many girls, or rather many students. The sort of person who kept himself to himself – an unfortunate social awkwardness. Nonetheless, he took the request and went straight away. As he reached round the corner outside of the building, he noticed a girl with short black hair in a sleek bob cut, smiling in her navy bathing suit as she too noticed him. Adjusting his glasses, Machiya spoke in a small, soft voice.
"Ah, um. Mashiro-san, what did you call me for..? And why are you wearing a swimsuit?" He couldn't help but comment and point out the obvious, being an inept sixteen year-old and also being painfully aware that she was indeed a girl in a dripping wet bathing suit.
"Sorry about that, our club activities just finished. I want to speak to you as soon as possible, so I was in a rush."
Mashiro ruffled her hair with her fingers, the hairs on her fringe falling messily into place as she took a step towards him.
"Ah."
"Machiya-kun, you're in the film club, right?"
"Y-Yes, I'd say so." Machiya kicked himself mentally for an awkward response.
"Do you have your camera?"
"Yeah.. I'm in charge of filming.. So right now, here." Without a hint of hesitation, he brought up hand up and showed the device. Mashiro gave a gleeful smile, a hint of pink flushing over her cheeks. A hand that was beside her hip moved up to her collar bone, signifying a slightly coy appearance.
"Ah, I was hoping that.. you could film me with that camera in your hand."
