"Attack!" Aspen watched on in horror as the flood of enemy wolves cascaded into the clearing, snarling with the lust for blood. A dark orange-hued canine threw himself at her, causing her to snap out of her terrified shock and quickly react. The brute had managed to clamp his jaws around her left foreleg, so she took the opportunity to bite his exposed shoulder. She tried to tear off the flesh, or at least to draw large amounts of blood, but the canid released his grip on her leg and they both pulled back, vicious looks on both their faces. Aspen was not ready to lose to the cheating mutts, and the male obviously wanted to win. She took the chance to lunge at his exposed chest, causing him to whimper and try to break free. Being quite masculine, the wolf was able to break free, but not without Aspen drawing blood. At that very moment, an all to familiar shriek filled the air; and the entire battlefield fell silent.
The fae was well aware of the fact most of the wolves' craniums swung from the origin of the vocalisation to where she stood, adjacent the den. All the fighting had stopped, so she snuck over.
There, in a pool of blood, lay the Alpha, Raze. Above him, an overly large male wolf stood, scarlet stained maw peeled back to reveal beastly yellow ivories. "The battle has been won. We have finally taken back what is rightfully ours." Aspen was in pure denial. Surely her one and only leader couldn't be defeated. She took a step forward towards the colossal male.
"I am Aspen, the Beta of Raze's pack. I believe I have a right to ask what will happen to my fellow pack-mates." She spoke with all the authority she could muster, which was not much. The other wolf replied.
"You are to all scram, you are no longer a pack. If I find you have reformed, I will slaughter you all." He snarled at that part. "Either that, Or you join me."
"Very well." Aspen lowered her cranium, defeated. "I shall depart now. Is it ok if I took my Alpha's body, so I could bury it?"
"We will do that, young fae. We are not monsters. If you cannot live on your own, feel free to join me." He had the glint in his eye that Aspen dreaded so very much. Aspen didn't have to be intelligent to know it was a threat. If she left, she'd be tracked down and killed.
"...as long as I can ensure my pack-mates can depart safely and I get to see Raze buried with the respect and dignity he deserves." The brute flicked his ear, probably to show Aspen he was pleased he didn't have to waste any more time on tracking wolves down.
"Very well. Welcome to the pack, Omega." He smirked, and Aspen could do nothing but bow her head towards what she assumed was her new Alpha. She could only just see, in the corner of her eye, the rest of Raze's pack leave.
Aspen howled with sorrow as the other wolves finished scraping the final pieces of dirt over Raze's body. They joined in, and Aspen was happy to see that they had kept their word. The Alpha, who Aspen had been harassed by non-stop for the past hour, stood next to her. Daunting her. Daring her to attack him in rage. But she held her broken self together, bowing her head. She silently stated what Raze had done so many times when his wolves had been buried. It was then she felt the impatient Alpha shove her haunches, telling her to move away. She lowered her head, and began to slink back to the den.
It was a week before she was allowed to do anything. Aspen had discovered that the Alpha's name was Ruax. He'd become meaner, and Aspen still bared the many wounds from the pack's vicious attacks. She wasn't allowed to hunt, nor say anything. It was like she was a chew toy. "Oi!" Ruax's massive Head appeared at the entrance. "What are you doing, lazing about? Get up and show us your loyalty." Aspen got to her feet.
"Yes sire." She lowered her head and tucked her tail beneath her legs, shaking slightly. She crawled outside the den, and lowered herself to the ground.
"She's learnt well." The Beta commented, the corners of her maw rising in the beginnings of a smile smile. Aspen didn't move. "Perhaps we could promote her."
"And give her ideas to rebel?" Ruax scoffed. "She's fine like this, under my control. Perhaps I should pair her with one of the other males. She's fit enough to produce pups; and if she dies, it won't matter." Aspen didn't quite like that idea. The thought of romance between wolves already disgusted her.
"What Male though? We'd need one who is Unmated, fit enough to provide strong pups, and someone who won't try to leave the pack."
"Your point is Fair... Perhaps Dusty would suit." Aspen whined. She would refuse to give birth to anything that would make the pack stronger. Let alone be harassed by whoever Dusty was. She smiled when she spotted the bear down the slope that lead up to the den.
She darted away from the Alpha and Beta, sprinting as fast as she could. She needed to run past that bear. Lure the others towards it. She ran with pure determination. Ruax had taken off after her, barking with rage. She reached the bear, and ran past it, hoping to hear the muffled cries as Ruax and his followers ran into the beast. But it never happened. She turned her head around to see what had happened. To her horror, she saw Ruax had been too smart for her. He'd moved around the bear, and was now a few wolf lengths away from her. On top of that, a week of not eating had rendered her weak, and she began to tire. Ruax had feasted on years of the finest prey; he was not so easily beaten. He leaped on Aspen, bringing her to the ground. They struggled for a few seconds, before the Alpha got a grip on Aspen's neck, and it was all over for her.
