Skyloft's Wisdom

A Legend of Zelda FanFic by Kmc

"O Youth of great destiny, awaken and find thy way to the forgotten land below", the voice in my dream echoed.

"What do you mean?" I yell into the light coming from the horizon, but I receive no answer. Then the light is overtaken by darkness and I fall into the abyss. I scream, but to no avail. I am alone.

I wake up on the floor in my room, I had the same dream again, and I fell out of bed, again. "It's Just a dream." I tell myself, and then begin to prepare for the day. I walk over to my closet and pick out my favorite dress, light cerulean blue, like my eyes, with embroidered flowers along the hem. Next, I begin to work on my long, tangled, blackish- brown hair. I struggle to brush out all of the tangles from having another night of tossing and turning. "What could my destiny be?" I wonder as I braid my hair.

I decided to ignore the dream and get ready for the day's festivities. Today is the Knight's wing ceremony and my older brother Link is competing today. I have no doubt that he won't win. He's strong, brave, and he will play fair, unlike that jerk Groose. Groose has hated my brother since they were kids, because Groose likes Zelda, but Zelda likes my brother and they have always been friends. I knew something was up when I heard Groose wish my brother good luck.

I found Link at one of the jumping platforms with Zelda. They were talking then Zelda pushed him off the edge, to encourage him to practice maneuvers. However, when link called his Loftwing, he didn't come. Zelda looked scared so I ran to the platform, jumped off and called my teal and orange Loftwing and dove down in time to catch my brother.

"Thanks Layni." He said with a sigh of relief. I flew back to the platform and as soon as Link got off Zelda slammed into him and held tight. My brother's face flushed bright red.

"I'm sooooo so sorry, I didn't know. I-I" Zelda broke into a few sobs and Link calmed her down and told her its okay.

I broke the awkward silence by saying" I bet Groose did this." Zelda nodded and ran towards the knight academy, with a determined look on her face. I turned back to Link and gave him a hug, "Don't worry. I'll help you find your Loftwing."

"Thanks Layni", he replied then we began to search the island. About half an hour in the search, we came across a cave and found Links Loftwing behind some wooden bars. Link kicks at them, the wood splinters and his Loftwing flies out. The massive crimson bird circles around then lands next to Link, and rubs his head on his chest, almost knocking him over. I smile at their reunion, and then remember the ceremony. "You'd better get going or you'll miss the ceremony." I tell him, and then as he flies away I wish him luck.

I sprint back to the platform where all the students participating were waiting. Zelda was there with her father, Headmaster Gaepora; he had postponed the ceremony until Link had found his Loftwing. I smiled at Groose, knowing he was furious that Link had found his bird. All of the contestant's line up and at the signal jump off and the race begins. Just as I thought, Link won it easily, except for the fact that Groose and his friends were pelting him with rocks during the whole thing. But even with their cheating, Link won in a record time.

He landed back on the island and the rest of the ceremony went on. I was proud of my brother; he was going to be the best knight. During the ceremony, Zelda played the goddess harp and the beautiful melody she sang was about the legendary hero. After the ceremony Link and Zelda went for a ride on their Loftwings.

I decided to head back to the academy to study, even though today was the ceremony, classes resume tomorrow and I have a huge test. I always try my best and I am the top student in my class, which makes most of my fellow students jealous, and angry. It has led to some teasing including calling me "Brainy Layni". But I don't really care what they think, because I'm going to be a great knight, who knows her history. After studying a while, there was a knock at my door, it was the Headmaster. "Good evening Headmaster." I say as I study his grave face, something must be wrong.

"Hello Layni, I have some bad news."

"What?" I ask, scared to find out his answer.

"While out riding with Link, Zelda was sucked into a tornado and it dragged her down to the surface. "I gasped when I heard that. Zelda and I are best friends, and I can't imagine how frightened she must be.

"What about my brother?" I ask on the verge of tears.

"He was found by the knights and is unconscious in his room." He replied.

I bolted to Link's room and opened the door. He was alright, and was just sleeping. I sat by his bed and waited till he woke, which wasn't till the next night. I had fallen asleep and when he woke up, I woke up and hugged him tightly, happy that he was going to be fine. He let go and asked "Where Is Zelda?" I shook my head and told him all that Headmaster told me, when I finished Link got up and ran to the Headmaster's office. The door shut before I could go in and even though I probably shouldn't have I put my ear up to the door and listened. I could make a bit here and there.

"...Zelda...Surface...Sword...Temple"

I backed away from the door and went to the balcony, where I watched Link after he left the school. He went to the goddess statue and then a bright beam of light shone out in the clouds. Link called his Loftwing and flew towards the pillar of light, then began to dive down beneath the clouds. He disappeared, to the surface. I couldn't help but be curious and I couldn't just stay up here worrying about petty things, while my brother and only living relative was down in a mysterious place risking his life.

I went back to my room and packed a small bag with the essentials; food, water, my bow, which Link made me, and quiver. Fully equipped, I ran out in the darkness and came to a diving platform. I heard someone call my name. I looked back to see the headmaster, he must have heard me. He was a few yards away, but I heard him clearly.

"Layni, you cannot go down there, it's too dangerous!"

"I can't stay here while my brother could be in danger down there. I'm sorry Headmaster." I said, and then leapt off. I looked at the pillar of light with determination; I couldn't just let him go alone. I called my Loftwing and we began to descend, once above the light, a tornado came and ripped me off my bird. I screamed, and then as I fell, I went unconscious.
