A little story update on Valentine's day. Hope you like it.

Kim and Noah were grateful for their weekend away. Babysitting the kids was hard work but Lucian enjoyed it. Scarlett enjoyed it too. Olivia hadn't warmed up to her but Scarlett was okay with it. She had faith that the little girl would eventually accept her.

One could only hope.

Lucian could imagine the little girl pouting on their wedding day. He didn't want that to happen but Olivia was stubborn. It was a family trait. He was stubborn too, but years of working on his character and getting older helped him at least lower his pride every once in a while.

Family was more important than pride.

Kim hugged the life out of him when he was ready to leave together with Scarlett, letting the little family get some quality time in before bedtime. He was sure the girls wanted to talk their parents' ears off about their time with their uncle and Scarlett.

Noah laughed when his brother noticed Lucian could barely hug Kim back. His wife was strong which surprised all of them. Scarlett who stood beside him tried to hide her giggle but they still caught the end of it.

He threw her a playful glare, "You're next." He warned her.

Kim pulled out of the tight hug and moved to Scarlett, "You are next." She agreed.

Scarlett had to brace herself when Kim suddenly hugged her.

It was his turn to hold back his laughter. Scarlett took only a minute to compose herself then she hugged Kim back with everything she had too. Noah threw him a look which said it all. He wasn't marrying Scarlett tomorrow though.

There was still the little issue of Elliot.

Scarlett still hadn't opened up about that. Michael was keeping an eye out on that guy. So far Elliot hadn't done anything out of the ordinary, it could be that the guy took his advice. He could only hope that the man's temper didn't get the better of him.

A ruined career would get him nowhere in this city, he hoped Elliot was smart enough to stay away.

He shared a look with Scarlett. He noticed the split second of sadness which flashed across her eyes. He didn't know what brought it on but he couldn't push her to talk either. Not in front of his brother and sister-in-law.

"Don't be a stranger." Kim pulled away from Scarlett and eyed him suspiciously, "I don't care how busy you are you make time for the girls." She threatened him.

He couldn't help but stare at her with a straight face, "Yes, Kim."

She nodded, "Good."

Kim smiled at Scarlett, "You're always welcome." The change of tone was actually hilarious, but he couldn't laugh after getting threatened. He was sure Olivia got her temper from Kim. She just showed them her true colors. It was terrifying.

He left together with Scarlett, ignoring how amused Noah had looked at them. His brother was a mind reader or maybe their emotions were just so fucking clear on their faces Noah couldn't help but laugh at them.

The ride to Scarlett's apartment was silent at first, she fiddled with the radio trying to hide how awkward they both felt. She settled on a station which played pop music, she put the volume low enough for him to tune out whoever was singing their heart out.

He wasn't in the mood to listen to anyone else be overemotional.

"Your family is great." That came out of nowhere, "I mean your mom isn't instantly warming up to me but I feel like she doesn't completely hate me either." When he shot a glance at her he noticed how she smiled a little, "I'm sure Olivia will warm up to me eventually."

She has to if Scarlett is around for a very long time. The girl had no choice.

He wouldn't say that to the hopeful sounding Scarlett though, she wouldn't appreciate it.

He could hear the smile in her voice as she continued, "I wouldn't mind spending time with your family at all. They're nice people."

"They are." He agreed, "They love spending time with you too."

She took a deep breath, "So I need to come clean about something before this gets too serious."

He didn't interrupt her, he knew this was going to be difficult for her. He waited, letting her take her time.

"This job I didn't get because I was the best choice, your previous assistant Lara owed me a favor and I collected it."

The obvious smile in her voice not present anymore, she sounded quiet almost too fragile. He needed to focus on his driving no matter how much he wanted to console her. It was saver to stay focused on the road.

When they reached her apartment he could pull her in his arms and tell her over and over again that she no longer needed to be afraid.

That he was there for her.

"I needed it. There was a guy I dated before you-" Another huge intake of breath before she continued, "He wasn't pleasant. At first, it was great but every relationship starts out like that. Slowly he tried to control every aspect of my life. I couldn't see my friends anymore and if I pushed him he always made sure I met up with them on his terms. He was always present like he didn't trust me."

"He probably didn't. He might have been paranoid about you leaving him because deep down he knew you couldn't be happy with the way he behaved." Lucian tried to stay calm but he was feeling angry. Ready to punch Elliot in the face.

"When after a really bad fight he hit me, he was shocked by it too but it did happen." She paused, swallowing maybe because she was speaking so fast she barely took a breath, "After that, I ran without looking back. I remembered Lara bragging about her fancy life up here and we were close in high school." She didn't sound terrified or sad anymore, when he glanced at her again he noticed the small smile spread across her face, "Fine we were friends in high school so I was sure she'd help even if she owed me a favor."

"Lara is a good person so yeah she would have helped you regardless of the favor or not."

She laughed, sounding out of breath and the laugh sounding a little out of place. In all honesty, she sounded if she was near tears so he was ready to park the car but when she noticed what he was doing she stopped him.

"We're almost home, I'll be fine." She sniffed, "I'm just glad I had the strength to leave without looking back."

"He's an asshole."

She laughed again, "You don't know that, you don't know him."

He wouldn't mention he met Elliot at her apartment she would freak out even more.

"He treated you like he owned you so by default that makes him an asshole."

What she said then surprised him more than her story about Elliot.

"I really love you, Lucy."

He nearly let go of the steering wheel but he reminded himself that they'd probably both die if he did that. That might be an exaggeration but he wouldn't be the reason why they got in an accident. The tight feeling in his throat and his accelerated heartbeat made it difficult to focus.
