Of Mice And Men Revised Ending

-----------------------------------------------------------------

"Sure, right now. I gotta. We gotta."

And George raised the gun (the rest is what i wrote) and tried to steady it. He brought the end of the gun close to Lennie's head, where the neck and head meet.George's arm shook and try as he might he couldn't steady it. George started to lower the gun, but realized he owed it to Lennie. Geroge knew that if he didn't kill Lennie the others would, but they might make him suffer. George raised the gun back up and steadied it with bot his hands.

"Jus' keep on lookin' Lennie....like you can almost see it," said George as his voice faded to a whisper.

"An' I get to tend to the rabbits?"

"Yeah. You can tend to the rabbits."

Lennie smiled from ear to ear. He was so happy; George wasn't mad at him and he could tend to the rabbits. George put his finger on the ice cold trigger. As he pulled the trigger back a single tear fell into the green water. George was shaking violently; he lowered the gun, keeping a firm grip on it.

"George! George! Where you at, George?" Carlson and Slim called out from somewhere down the trail.

George didn't move. He just sat there looking at the gun in his hands. George remembered the time he first met Lennie. George remembered how Lennie liked to pet soft things, and he remembered all he made Lennie do for him.

Slim burst through the underbrush and yelled, "There you are! The fella's an' I heard a gun."

Carlson and Curley came out of the brush, and when they saw the seen that lay before then they stared in shock.

Carlson asked, "Where'd ya get my luger from? Did he have it?"

George continued to sit and stare at the gun; "I...jus' took it an' shot him...right in the back of the neck."

Slim walked over and knelt next to George and rested a hand on his shoulder, "George ya hadda...Come on, let's get you a drink. I swear ya hadda do it. Don't ya think it's better than if me or one of us did it?"

"I ain't got nothin' now. I won't get no land. I ain't got Lennie to look after. It's just me. I don't wanna be alone..."

Carlson interupted, "What's botherin' you? C'mon George."

"I can't... I don't wanna be alone. Me an' Lennie, we were different...but not now. I ain't got no land, an' I ain't got no Lennie. I'm all alone..." George's voice drifted off to a whisper.

George stood up and looked at every one, but he never let go of the gun. As the sun slipped behind the hills the rays of sun spread out, like a butterfly's wings. The light illuminated the muddy green pond and a water snake slid across the surface, heading for the safety of the weeds. Slim started to walk away, thinking that George was following him.

"We'll go get that drink now," Slim said as Curley and Carlson turned to follow.

George raised the gun and set its cold muzzle on his temple.

"Ain't got no one now," he murmured.

Slim turned around, "George...what's the matta'? C'mon now, ya don't wanna do that. We'll go an' get a drink an' everything'll be alright'."

George placed his finger on the trigger, with his eyes brimming with tears that threatened to spill over.

"Ain't got no one. We was supposed t' be different. WE WAS SUPPOSED T' BE DIFFERENT!"

George pulled the trigger as the last rays of light disappeared behind the hills. He fell to the ground facing Lennie, and the gun flew through the air, landing in the pond.

Curley just turned back around and continued down the trail. Carlson stepped over Lennie and George's corpses and waded into the water. He found his gun and dried it on his pants, then turned on his heel and followed Curley. Slim walked over to a bunch of daisies that blew in the soft breeze and seemed untouched by the rest of the world. Slim bent, picked the flowers, and bent down by George. Slim laid the daisies in the hand that George previously held the gun in. Slim closed George' s eyes, looked at Lennie and then he too walked away.
