My house smells stale when I enter for the first time in days, like all signs of life had left long ago. It makes me sad to think how fast the smell of home can deplete. How it can fade from your heart in a few hours. In just four days the smell I know is gone. If I focus I can distinguish the scents that are here now. Leather, metal, and the most prominent one: paint. My nose adjusts and now it seems bitter sweet as we settle back down. It was as if the stale scent knew it wasn't welcome. And when we entered the house was drinking its first sign people in over 48 hours. So maybe it's not all bad. The smell of home may deplete but it's image will be preserved. And when you return everything will be normal again. The kitchen will once again become stained with the smells of food. Your bedroom laced with the scent of sleep, and books, and clothes. And once again the living room will be filled with laughter as the house comes alive.
