(a/n: I know luke is 18 but for the sake of the story just pretend that he's 17 okay)

{Lily}

Sighing in frustration, I tried, once again, to open my car door.

No such luck.

My car was literally the biggest piece of shit in the world. It was a hand me down from my grandma, and even now, months after she sold it to me, it still had that old lady smell. Not to mention the fact that the passenger side door was extremely hard to open because of all the times my grandpa rammed his walker into it. Don't get me wrong, I loved my grandparents to death, and I was grateful for the car, but it was sort of frustrating when I really needed to talk to the band director before homeroom and my lunch was stuck inside the car.

I gripped the door handle tightly and pulled with all my might. Fortunately, it opened.

Unfortunately, it flew open, and I fell to the side due to the force it opened with.

Even more unfortunately, I fell straight into Luke Hemmings, king of the school, football jock, and complete asshole.

Great. Just fucking great.

"Watch it, Matthews," he practically snarled. "I'm not in a good mood this morning, and I'm also not in the mood to deal with a geek like you to be falling into me."

I just rolled my eyes. Whoa, Luke Hemmings wasn't in a good mood?! Since when?! Oh, right, since he was born 17 years ago.

"To be perfectly honest, I'm not really in the mood to be falling into assholes like yourself, but you don't see me complaining," I retorted, and watched as his eyes grew wide. It was always the same; nobody ever expected the quiet girl to snap back. I hadn't been quiet for like, three years now, but somehow I still had a reputation as the quiet, smart girl sitting in the corner reading a book. I didn't really mind, though; I could be pretty shy or reserved at times, and besides, it was always worth it to see the look of surprise on people's faces when they found out I actually could stand up for myself.

Luke stood there for a moment, dumbfounded, before composing himself, huffing out a "whatever," and stalking off. I smirked slightly, knowing I had won this one. Taking my lunch money from where it had fallen underneath the passenger seat, I slung my backpack over my shoulder, slammed the car door, and strolled away to the entrance to band hall.

"So, if the father is colorblind, and the mother is a carrier, what is the likelihood of their offspring inheriting the disease?" Ms.Laschoff asked the question as she struggled to work the projector that would put last night's homework-questions on a simple pedigree chart showing colorblindness in a family-on the board. I smiled to myself, partly because watching our ancient biology teacher try and use technology was hilarious, and partly because I loved genetics. Truth to be told, it had always come easily to me, and now that we were starting a heredity unit and reviewing some basics, I was practically in heaven. Doing heredity problems for 50 minutes was definitely not a waste of time.

"Ashton?" A name was called out from the front of the class, and the kid sitting next to me (dirty blonde curly hair, dimples, cute as hell, nice enough even though he was friends with Luke) jerked his head up from the desk. Judging by the shininess of the desk, which only occurred when it was wet, Ashton had not only been asleep, but he'd also been drooling. Ew.

"Uh, I, um, er, yes, Ms.Laschoff?" he stuttered, and I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped me at how flustered he was. He looked over at me and smiled, a faint blush gracing his cheeks. Ms.Laschoff, however, did not find it very funny.

"Mr.Irwin, I would greatly appreciate it if you would stay awake in class, I know you're only taking this class to get extra credits, but I will not hesitate to fail you if you do not even try! Now, please answer question 10 on the homework for me."

Ash's eyes lit up and he grinned widely as realization dawned on his face. "Oh! I know that one! The likelihood of their child having the disease is 2:4, or 50%." He smiled in pride as Ms.Laschoff grudgingly accepted his answer and moved on to the next question.

"Psst. Lily." Ashton's voice came from beside me, and I looked over at him, quirking an eyebrow in confusion. He smirked and tossed a paper my way.

Luke told us what you said to him today. That's pretty cool, I didn't know you had it in you.

I was about to write back to him when the bell rang, signaling it was time to go to our next class. As we pulled our backpacks over our shoulders, I thanked Ashton for what he said in the note and told him that the look on Luke's face was absolutely priceless. He bursted out laughing and we said goodbye before we went our separate ways. As I walked to my locker to get my books for the next class, I realized something.

Luke may be a dick, but that didn't mean Ashton was.

I wanted to get to know the curly haired cutie in my biology class, and I planned on doing so.
