It's called 'a death wish'

Ok, so theirs this guy. And he joins some sort of knights training program. None of these kids know each other and there's this broad guy who sticks out to him.
At first nobody give him a chance in hell, but he gets by middle of the pack ish.
And in this world, a variety of 'mythical' creatures exist. Once they pass the physical training they are given guard duties for a few nights a week and they begin the second phase of their training. Running away.
Their is a valley and they have to get from one side to the other without getting hooked off he ground by their trainer, who is riding a dragon.
Dragons bond with 1 maybe 2 riders in their lifetime and only those of an opposite sex to themselves.
Once they have learnt how to run away from a dragon, they must learn how to ride one.
Now when your dragon chosen you, you know because it won't kill you (or something).
Now the biggest and baddest of this rare species that the stables holds, was wild caught. Thus is not uncommon but due to the lack of women in general in their ranks he had not chosen a rider, or so it was thought.
At this point the main charicter is friends with the mystery guy. And tries to get him to come back when mysterious guy walks towards the dragon
The dragon not only exepts mystery, but very quickly forms a strong bond. The trainers and knightlings are awed as a dragon has only ever bonded with a male once before and that was because the man was gay (gave of a stronger smell of eostorogen then the others)So it go's something along the lines of "it's not me lads" as he sits on his back "must be the dragon"
Still, mystery comes across some unhappy peers and gets beat up whilst off duty. Main charicter, I'd on guard duty and upon finishing, finds mystery bloody and unconscious in a hallway.
Main, takes mystery back to his room and cleans up his face. When mystery wakes up he starts to cry.
Main tries to explain that nobody really beleive it, they were just pissed that mystery had done better.
Saying that it wasn't that horrible being gay even if he wasn't. He was gay, what difference did it make?
At this point main points out that mysteries shit is ripped and offers him a spair.
Mystery then shows/confesses to him that he is trans and asks if he thinks any less of him and is begins crying again when mystery says that he might be the man lies the person he's ever met.
The pair get closer, brothers even, they have each other's backs. Even their dragons are friendly with each other and their opposite trainers.
They pass and gain knightship along with the other elites who survived training.
The pair end up in a riding formation with their trainer after his team are killed when their dragons began fighting. Their trainer is devastated but after seeing how well the friends dragons get on with each other,he decides to minimise the risks of loosing more peers and asks them to join him.
During a routine fly-over, mains saddle straps snap and he is dislodged from his dragon. Mystery and his dragon free-fall after him but have to pull up. Mystery lands on the shore of the lake and is brought the mains body by mermaids.
Main dies in mysteries arms due to landing on sharp rocks whilst their dragons cocoon them with their wings.
And the point of view changes to mystery. Who over the next few weeks, forms a much stronger bond without realising it with mains dragon and is accidently chosen whilst watching a few high borns get chosen.
From then on the story is about discovering the conspiracy behind mains death.
