Miss Fielder kept a stream of chatter up as she lead Phoebe down the corridor. She was evidently trying to make up for her previous blunder.
Phoebe nodded and occasionally inserted a comment like "Oh definitely, I totally agree!". She really wanted to get back to her class and meet her new classmates.
Miss Fielder stopped suddenly and caused Phoebe to almost trip over. Luckily, she caught her before she could hit the ground. They had almost bumped into a blond girl and a teacher in the middle of a heated argument.
" Look, for the last time, I am not blind!! Now can I go back to class please?!" The girl was saying."Is there a problem?" Asked Miss Fielder.
"Yes! Mr King keeps saying that I'm blind! I think I'd know if that was the case!"
"Oh dear! I'm so sorry!! I think there has been a misunderstanding! This is Phoebe. She is blind" explained Miss Fielder pulling a rather confused Phoebe forward.
"See! She's the blind one not me! My name's Lorraine, not Phoebe!" Scowled Lorraine, sniffing in annoyance.
She turned and marched off, flicking her hair unnecessarily.
"Well, that was awkward!" Said Phoebe who had figured out what had happened.
"Oh, er, yes, I'll, er just get you back to class" replied Miss Fielder, thoroughly embarrassed by the ridiculous mistake she and Mr King had made. They exchanged a look before setting off down the corridor again.
After a couple of seconds, Miss Fielder stopped abruptly again. This time, Phoebe had been prepared and prevented herself from falling into the door.
As she was led into the classroom, Charcoal at her heels, Phoebe felt her heart beat loudly.
As a rule, Phoebe was never nervous. She didn't allow herself to be. Since the day she was born, Phoebe had had so many operations that she had got used to the swooping sensation in her stomach. The butterflies didn't bother her.
So why were they doing loop-the-loops and nosedives? Why were her hands sweating? Why was her heart doing the tango?
Phoebe had never felt more nervous in her life and as she faced the front of her class, she could feel her knees knocking.
"Class, as you know we have two new members to our form. Lorraine Kingston and Phoebe Robinson. Now girls, would you like to introduce yourselves?" Miss Fielder asked.
Immediately Lorraine stepped forward, twirling a strand of hair round her finger as she talked.
"So, my name is Lorraine Kingston and just to let you know, I don't want to be at this stupid posh school with you stuck up idiots! My old school was so much better than this dump!"Miss Fielder raised an eyebrow.
"Now Lorraine, I'm sure you'll like it here! We are all very welcoming! If you'd like to sit over there next to Cheryl? Cheryl, give her a wave."Haughtily, Lorraine marched down the aisle and plonked herself down in the seat Miss Fielder had pointed out. She sighed heavily and deliberately leaned away from a slightly bemused Cheryl.
"Now then, Phoebe? Would you like to explain about why you have your dog?" Asked Miss Fielder in what she thought was an understanding tone.
"Um... Yeah... I'm Phoebe and this is my guide dog Charcoal. I'm,um, blind so er yeah..." Tailed off Phoebe uncertainly.
"Why aren't you at a special school then?" Asked a voice.
"Cheryl! You must be respectful! We must all try and be welcoming and accepting help Phoebe get to lessons until her Learning Support Assistant arrives!" Gabbled Miss Fielder, leading Phoebe to a desk.
As she sat through registration, Phoebe felt like a tiny island in the middle of a vast sea. She didn't like this place. She had never felt so alone.
