Written from Caroline's POV
***
I sneak a glance across the desk at my new friend Phoebe. Her assistant is explaining everything to her in a soft voice as Phoebe chews the ends of her long glossy hair in concentration.
I'm almost dizzy with excitement. I've never actually had a "best friend" before. In Year 7 I hung out with Yasmin, Ruby, Yvonne and Addy but when Ruby moved, I had nothing in common with the rest of them and we just drifted.
In Year 8, I was in the popular group with Cheryl and Camomile but I really didn't fit in. We're not friends but they still say hi in the corridors which is better than what most people can say.
This morning, I kept my fingers crossed in the hope that someone nice would turn up. Lorraine was a disappointment but Phoebe was...intriguing.
Something about the nervous looking blind girl made me want to be her friend. Don't get me wrong because it wasn't pity. She just made me curious.
Now here I am; Phoebe's "New Friend"! I can't wait for the bell to go so I can talk to her.

" Hi again!" I say running up. "It's Caroline!" I add because I'm not sure if she can tell.
"Yeah, I can tell from your voice" she says, grinning.
"Do you want to hang out?" I ask trying not to sound too nervous.
"That would be awesome!! Yes please!" Nods Phoebe, relief spreading over her face.
"Well I'll leave you to it girls. Caroline can you escort Phoebe to her next lesson? Geography with Mr Tern in Room 32?" Asks her assistant.
"Of course! C'mon Phoebe! And Charcoal. Break time." I say taking her hand and leading her out to my favourite corner.
As we walk, we chat and I feel the best I've felt in ages. It might sound like exaggeration but it's true. Phoebe has a relaxing aura. I don't feel like I have to make her like me.
"Do you mind if I ask about your eyesight? It's OK if its to personal to tell someone you've talked to for 2 minutes."
"I wasn't born blind," she starts "I was born to early, with a weak heart. I still have problems now. I had to be kept in hospital for the first 4 months of my life. I had a bad fever when I was 2 months old. It caused me to go blind. I'm having surgery this year to correct my eyesight a bit. I'll only be visually impaired then."
"Oh." I can tell that she's really nervous about it. "Don't worry! My twin brother had an accident when he was ten. He lost his leg but the surgery saved his life. Sorry, that wasn't particularly helpful..."
"It's OK. I'm sorry about your brother." She replies.
I smile "Nah! Finch's fine! Just as annoying as before. Anyway, what do you like doing in your spare time?"
"I like listening to audio books ."
"Really!! I love reading! What's your favourite book?"
"The Hunger Games and The Lorien Legacies!"
"I love the Hunger Games!!! Keeta or Kale?" I squeal.
"Kale all the way!!!"
"What is wrong with you!! " I yell!
"I'm sorry?! Kale is only the best ship ever!!!""Oh my god! You two are so cringe!"
I look up. Lorraine is standing above us, arms crossed. Cheryl stands next to her looking slightly awkward.
"Sorry, did I ask for your opinion?" I retort.
"Oh, you're sarcastic"
"Evidently. C'mon Phoebe. See ya around Cheryl" I call and pull Phoebe along behind me.
I feel really cool as I walk down the corridor, with my friend in tow. Everybody knows that despite being really nerdy, all the arguments with Finch have paid off. Get into a fight with me and I'll have ruined your entire reputation before you can even lift a finger.
"So, Geography next?" I say turning to Phoebe only to see that she has gone. The corridor is empty...
