ONE SECOND THE television played a soapy romance movie, the sound of the television drowning out the storm pounding on my window. The next second, darkness flooded the room. The only sound left being the crashing of thunder and the snapping of rain as it pounds on the glass.
I grab my phone from next to me and shake it twice to turn on the flashlight.
But nothing happens. Frantically, I  press down on the power button. When nothing happens, I try again.
Angered, I throw my phone on the couch and run upstairs to my room.
I sit against the window and look out at the town.
Neon signs of towns and businesses the next town over  along with the headlights of cars shining in the distance outline the edge of our town.
The entire town is out of power.
I Huff as a fall into my bed, the silence already starting to drive me mad.
Staring at my ceiling, I slowly drift to sleep.

~~~
The morning light and distant sirens fill my bedroom.
Getting up, I rub my eyes and look out the window. Casper scratches at my bedroom door, dragging me away from the window.
I open my door and the ball of a corgi storms into my room, filled with energy.
I walk downstairs with Casper leading the way before opening the back door and stepping outside. The smell of fresh rain and stirred dirt fills the street. Casper runs past me out to the backyard and into the fresh mud, sliding around.
Trees have fallen over and the power is still out.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath , and am immediately distracted by a knock on the door. Casper barks and runs into the house, tracking mud everywhere.
