Two and a half week passed by like that with them talking about anything, flirting and soon the week for the interparty was to start with the first meeting that Thursday evening.
Susan had bought a simple baby pink long gown with halter neck which had pearls placed around the neck of the dress and snaked around the gown in from her left shoulder to the back of her left leg the week before after much persuasion from him.

As much as she didn't want to, she couldn't help the bubble of excitement for the years' party... courtesy to a certain green eyed man.

After wearing her gown, a little dab of powder, a swipe of mascara and a little touch of pink lip gloss, she was ready to go... ah! Let's not forget her two years old strapped silver heels and clutch that she used for the event since that was the only party she ever attended anyway.
Just as she got to her living room to wait for him, the ugly thought that had hounded her for the past two weeks reared its head once more.
Are you really excited to go to 'the interwolf party' with a wolf who is not your mate!... who could and would definitely meet his mate there and leave you that exact moment!! You know you will be left alone with double shame, don't you?... you will never be able to live that down!!
She began to pace around the living room holding unto her phone in a death grip, after a moment of worry she gave up, unstrapped her shoes, dropped her clutch and changed into her pajamas. Opening her message app she texted James,

Hey, are you here?

I... she started but was interrupted by his call. Taking a deep breath she picked it and tried to swallow the lump in her throat,

'Hello'

'Hey... you are not planning on standing me up now, are you? Come on, I think we've had enough pep talk about it.

'you could really find your mate there then I'll be left... alone...' he sighed, 'Go to the party first, if you check around for a while and she's not there then you can come get me'

'you don't want to feel left out and humiliated' he concluded and she nodded even though he couldn't see her,

'Alright, let's do that. Though I doubt I'll find her now'

'How long have you been looking for her' she asked, wondering how much longer than she, he had been searching for his own mate.

'I wasn't exactly searching before...' he admitted guiltily, 'I wanted to be sure I could be responsible enough for a mate before going down that venture.

'What!!! you mean you expected a female that would have been looking all over for you, getting jealous at other women who had found their mates, feeling sad and unworthy, wait for you to be matured enough for her! Is she a child that you have to be responsible for? Or a burden? You are mates, you are supposed to grow together!' she hissed angrily,
'she might be with another now! You are my friend so I must tell you the truth... that was a very selfish and mean act' she scolded, her heart reaching out to a fellow she-wolf like her out there who would have been hoping and waiting for James.

He sighed deeply dragging his hand through his hair as he entered the event hall and felt nothing out of the ordinary...

She's not here

'I'm really sorry. I thought I was been wise and responsible with that decision'

'You know, finding her and telling her to wait for your return while contacting her often is another option... a much better option. She'd know you and live on the hope that you'll be back as soon as you are done with everything on your priority list'

'I didn't think of that' his hand was stained with the gell that had been applied on his hair so he wiped it off with a wet tissue that was at the side of the buffet table.

'I'll check for a while then come get you' he said trying to change the topic

'Now I just kind of hope you find her and put her out of her misery. And please don't tell her you were waiting to mature... you don't want to feel the wrath of that woman' she said and he chuckled nervously.

She meant what she said. Though knowing she might her lose date again made all the excitement for the party deflate, leaving her feeling empty.
He ended the call and she knew, she wasn't going for the party this year.

#####

Halfway through a movie showing on the TV channel titled Dracula Untold and a big cup of popcorn, a car's engine revved in front of her house followed by a knock on her door. A quick throw of popcorn into her mouth, she dragged herself on bare feet to the door and opened it to see James in a fitted black tuxedo, his once gelled hair unruffled courtesy of his hands and without thinking, she reached out and arranged it. As her hand came down, she noticed a single red rose held out to her as he smiled unsurely,

'Wow... you look...'

'Not ready for the party?' she smiled guiltily

'I said I'd come pick you up' he said as she picked the flower from his hand and inhaled it smiling,

'And I thought you'd definitely find her there'

'well, she isn't!! now can you please go dress up' he tucked her short hair behind her ear and it stuck out back.

She hesitated for a moment before running to her room to dress back and didn't bother putting on makeup again since the initial one was not cleaned yet.. Perhaps a dark part of her heart wanted him not to find his mate, so she kept waiting unconsciously.

He nodded smiling, 'You look ordinary. And beautiful that way' and she grinned. Offering her his arm he asked,

'May we?'

Looping her arm through his, her grin widening she answered,

'We may'
They went out to his car which was a black range rover where he had to help her up before entering and driving to the party venue.

Her heart began to beat fast as they got to the venue, thoughts of how she could be mocked or embarrassed made her panic and fear. Just as she was feeling grateful that many others heart were beating fast with anxiousness of meeting their mate, he held her hand and squeezed it lightly.

'are you alright?' he whispered and she nodded nervously, her legs and hands fidgeting.

'Look at me' he commanded and she stared at the swirling of green and a fleck of gold as he smiled warmly,

'Just look at me. We are the only ones in this world. We are invisible' he whispered as she got hypnotized by his eyes. He gave her a lingering kiss on her forehead and she froze in shock as he quickly got out of the car, opened her door, pulled her out and led her through the open door from which soft music came from inside.

The crowd was there just as she remembered they would always be after all there were new shifters every year, there was talking, laughing, dancing, eating and some sniffles.
She had been so distracted by her quick survey to see if anyone had notice her to realize her date had frozen with glazed eyes.

'Mate'

She froze and her heart dropped as she looked at the man beside her.

I knew I shouldn't have come! There was no chance he wouldn't find her!!... she thought as tears quickly filled her eyes and quickly pulled her hand away from him, slowly stepping away from his side.

The last thing she wanted was a scene with a very angry she-wolf and the new title of a slut from the gossipers for a man who isn't her mate and isn't worth her earning shame.
