For one night, just one, I wanted to forget about Ethan's dirty work. I wanted a night with Letty. To stay up late, watch horror movies, and talk. We've been doing this for years and honestly, I couldn't ask for a better best friend.
I made it home after about 30 minutes of walking. Mom's car was gone, which meant her and dad weren't home. Made me kind of sad, I was hoping to talk to mom about what happened but I know she needs time with dad. I unlocked the door and walked inside, going over to the kitchen and grabbing some chocolate milk out of the fridge, I pulled out my phone and dialed Letty's number. She eventually answered, "Hey girl! Did you ever get home? What the hell happened?" I smiled to myself, I love how we care so much about each other as if we were real sisters. Sometimes, I swear we are, it's creepy how we always know what we're both thinking and how we always know when there's something wrong. "I'm home, when you get here I will tell you about everything," I replied.
"Alright, well I'm bringing our favorite snacks and movies. Be ready," she said and hung up. I set my phone on the kitchen counter and went upstairs, putting my pajamas on. I looked around my room as I sat on my bed, sighing at my gray walls. I bought some paint a couple of weeks ago, but I just haven't felt the motivation to go ahead and paint my room. Maybe tonight Letty can help me, it's gonna be a hell of a mess but I really don't want to do it by myself. I have so many memories in this room with Ethan. After we broke up, I really wanted to move into the guest bedroom, but that's where he'd sleep when he spent the night. We never physically slept together, just spent time in my room playing board games and watching TV. It's not that I didn't want to actually sleep with him, I just... Felt like he would try to get more physical than I wanted to. We had sex, twice. And it wasn't fun. In fact, I hated it, so every time he'd want to spend the night I would claim that my mom told me he'd have to sleep in the guest room. It was a lie, but I just didn't want to do it anymore. He wasn't romantic about it and, it was kind of rough. Not my style at all.
I heard the doorbell ring down stairs and I turned off my lights. Heading down, I from the small window in the door that it wasn't Letty. I would recognize that red head any day, it was Aubrey. I rolled my eyes, and opened the door, Ethan's car was right beside the front lawn, and I let out a loud sigh, "God, what do you two want now? Haven't you done enough?"
Aubrey placed her hand on her chest, gawking at me, "Well, gee, how nice of you to invite me in. Do you have any wine?" She tried to pass me through the door, but I blocked her, "You need to leave pussycat, you're not allowed here," I looked over at Ethan, "And neither are you, mom made that clear this morning so please, just leave. Aubrey smiled at me and giggled through her teeth, "You didn't mind him being so close to you earlier, what's the problem now? I came by to get his sweater he left here when you two were," she looked down and back up at me, "dating. Ugh, can't see what he saw in you, darling." I looked over to my left, his sweater was hanging right outside of the coat closet door. It was my favorite of his. It still smelt like the cologne he used to wear all the time, and then my mind flooded with memories.
He gave me that sweater the night he first asked me out. It was freezing out, about a year and a half ago in the middle of January. He had pulled the sweater over my head and put my arms through it as he smiled at me, "Can't let a pretty girl like you freeze to death."
I went over and grabbed the sweater, taking it to Aubrey, "Here, take it and leave." She put the sweater on, over her dress, and it looked completely stupid. I could tell she was trying to rub it in my face. But that time, I saw Letty pull up. She looked pissed, she got out of the car and yelled over, "What's that trick doing here?"
"Trick? Excuse me? That's funny coming from someone like you," Aubrey exclaimed as she turned around.. Letty popped her trunk open and grabbed out her old baseball bat. That thing was made of pure aluminum and could knock out anyone if someone hit them hard enough with it. I widen my eyes as Letty started walking towards us, "What did you say, bitch?" Aubrey screamed, running over to Ethan's car and panicking, "Baby! She's gonna hit me! Call the cops!" I couldn't help but bend over and laughed as I watched her attempting to run in her high heels. She got into Ethan's car and rolled the window down, "Come at me, punk!" Letty was furious, so instead of hitting Aubrey, she hit the Ford. She hit the hood so hard that it bent inward, causing a little smoke to come out from underneath of it. I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe, this made the entire day completely better. "Letty! My fucking car! You'll pay for this!" Ethan yelled as he sped away, almost hitting the guard rail on his way down the road. Letty put her bat back into her trunk, grabbed some grocery bags out of the backseat then locked her car.
She walked up to me as I had a confused look on my face, "What? They pissed me off." I laughed with her, taking a few bags and inviting her inside. "Dude, you seriously just fucked up Ethan's car. I love you, but if you ever do that to Victor we're gonna have some words," I said as I giggled. She smiled and set the food in the kitchen, helping herself by grabbing a coke from the fridge, "You know I would never harm Victor, but Ethan and that low life of his deserved it." I nodded and agreed with her, putting some popcorn in the microwave, "Hey! We've got spaghetti noodles in the cabinet, you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"Oh yeah!" she said as she grabbed one of the pots from the dish drain. She began boiling the noodles and grabbed some things out of the fridge, "What do you want with yours, ranch or butter?" I thought for a moment as I grabbed the popcorn, "Butter!" Letty continued cooking as I looked through her luggage bag, "Hey! You brought our favorite horror movie!" She took the pot off the stove and started draining the noodles, "Girl, you know I did. Go pop it in while I get the food ready. And bring me my favorite blanket of yours!" I walked into the living room and set the popcorn down next to our drinks, and put in the DVD. The movie is called "Fair Haired Child". It's only an hour long, but it's always been out favorite horror movie since we were thirteen years old. It's still so scary to me, and it's been a long time since we've watched it.
After the movie, and talking for a couple of hours, we both cried together and discussed our futures. With her and Jules going to college soon, I didn't know what I was going to do without them. I seem to have always depended on them to lift me up when I'm not strong enough. But what is most important for them to go on with their lives, without worrying about me.
"Darcy, you know I'm going to come down here every chance I get. Jules is the one going across the country, not me. Okay? I'm going to be just a few hours up the road and we'll talk on the phone as much as you want," Letty said as her finished her bowl of noodles. I nodded and looked over at the TV, which was black since the movie had been off for a while. "What about Declan? Does he seem like a nice enough guy to hang out with for a while while we're gone?"
I couldn't help but to have a smile come across my face, hearing his name made me forget about Ethan all together. "Yes, but I don't want to use him for that," I replied, taking a sip of Smirnoff Ice. Letty thought for a moment and put her hands together, rubbing them, "You could always do the naughty if you ever get too bored." I burst into laughter and spilled my drink, all over the coffee table. "LETTY!" I screamed, "You're so nasty!"
And just like that, we were both cleaning up our mess and laughing like we were teenagers again. Our emotions going quickly from sad to happy, all at once. That always happens when we're together and I am so grateful for it. We decided to finally go to bed, and that we would paint my room the next day once our heads were clear and we didn't smell like butter.
