How to talk/not talk to a shy person:
1. Don't. (Some shy people would rather not to be talked to.)
2. Don't say things like:
- "You're so quiet. Why are you so quiet?" (First of all yes I know that. Second I don't know! What do you want me to say?)
- "Wow you actually talked!" People overreacting when a shy person talks a lot or speaks up. (It's honesty annoying.)
- "Speak up" or "talk louder". (Like I know I'm quiet and that you can't possibly hear anything I'm hearing, but it can be quite stressful to hear that multiple times. I would be embarrassed and become flustered. It doesn't help.)
- "Try and be more outgoing/more confident/etc." (If I knew that would help me I would have done that ages ago. It's just we either don't want to or it isn't that easy. Some of us want to be more outgoing, but is struggling to do so and people telling us to be more outgoing isn't going to change us in one day.)
- "Look at me in the eye." (It's hard for shy people to make eye contact with other people especially people who they aren't familiar with.)
