Chapter 4

Kendara had been laying in her bed for hours, she hed drifted in and out of consciousness afew times but her mind was too busy and she couldn't relax, or rather her shadows kept her from relaxing. They kept whispering things that she couldn't quite hear. she knew they were worried but she didn't know what they were worried about. Ken looked over at the clock on her bed side table, 4;00. She had enough time to get ready for the trying day ahead, go to the zen room for a while to try get the shadows to keep quiet and still be on time for morning training. Kendara jumped out of bed and walked into the onset bathroom her and theo sheard. Much like their desks theos side was immaculate and kendaras looked like a bomb had hit it, she liked to think of it as an organised mess though. Everything was on display and she could just grab whatever she needed, use it and put it down, instead of wasting time putting it back where it “belonged”. And so kendara brushed her teeth, leaving her toothbrush wherever there was space, she brushed her hair and washed her face then picked out an outfit for the day, black spandex yoga pants, black  trainers and a navy shirt, too much black made her look like a ghost, theo had once told her. So everyday kendaras entire outfit would be black, except one thing. Pulling her hair into a tight ponytail kendara rushed out the door and down the dark hallway. even though they had electricity there were candle sconces in the walls and all the candles were lit, casting an eerie glow onto the wooden walls. kendara jogged the last few yards to the common room, the corridor always gave her the creeps. The common room was a large lounge, it had 4 fire places, they were not lit as its was the middle of summer. There were tables, large and small, in clusters at the centre of the room, and groups of couches along the outside on the room, along the back wall was cupboards, a stove and an oven. Ken went over to the kitchen ariar and pulled out a box of her favorite cereal, she opened the fridge, discused as another cupboard, got some milk and added it to her cereal. Her shadows had gone unusually quiet, normally there was a slight hum, earlier it was louder than usual, demanding her attention, but now it was gone. When kendera was done with her breakfast she hastily made her way to the zen room, it was usually used for the siciks, but she had been given special all hours access to it after mr toto had found out that she could send shadows into the future. It took only a moment for the magic lock on the zen room door to recognise her, the room was entirely glass, except for the wall that the door was in, kendara sat in the middle of the room she looked up at the sky, down at the ground, at first she thought is was absurd to build a glass room jutting out of the 20th story of a building, but as she got used to it she realised that it was the perfect place to have a glass room. The feeling of floating above the world was oddly relaxing and looking up at the clear starry sky kendaras mind slowed, she looked out at the sea that borderd the school and reached for her shadows, she got no reply. This wasn’t the first time they had gone silent on her, it usually took them some time to gather information and usually they diddn’t like coming back with nothing. So kendara tried to see through them, she focused on a light that was creating a shadow, and sure enough she found one. Her unconchase slipped through into the shadow, it welcomed her. Kendara was in the headmistresses office, she was meeting with someone in military

Uniform. “They are not ready.” insisted the headmistress. “They can qure skills on the job, it’s been done before.” the officer answers. “By when do you need them?” the headmistress asked. “Two months.” replied the officers cool voice. The headmistress huffed. “I’m not interested in sending children to their deaths.” she squeaked “And nether are we.” the voice was almost reptilian. “We intend to win, and numbers will help a great deal.” “Can’t you just take the shadow girl? I know she’s the one you really want, her and her brother.” wined the headmistress. “This is not up for debate.” commanded the officer. “You will release the two thousand and they will be enscripted.” the officer said, and with that he turned and walked out the office, kendara jumped from shadow to shadow trying to get a look at his face, all she could see was a black sash, indicating he was a high value spy.
