Familianese military base, Camp le Jeune is just like any other military base, training, recruiting and deploying soldiers to serve their country. The soldiers learn to be unquestioningly obedient to every order from their commanding officers. This can be a lifesaver in a battle.
One day, just like any other, (or so it appeared to be) drills and such were in session, as usual. Then an unexpected notice was sent out for all those in the camp were to be at the mess hall in 10. The interruption caused a rippling of sensation through the camp as different theories of what was going on circulated. Some said it was probably an emergency deployment. Others said they were probably getting a new camp director. Either way, the anticipation was high as the soldiers filed into the mess hall. Slowly silence settled in as the side door opened letting in the camp director with a band of followers.
"A-TEN-SHUN!!!"
All the soldiers stood and saluted as one man. The commander came up to the platform.
"At ease."
As everyone settled down, Commander Sanchez scanned the hall, then glanced at his notes.
"Lieutenant Mayfield!" He called out."Sir!" Lt. James Mayfield stood at attention. He was the youngest lieutenant in the camp at 21, one of the most brilliant officers there were. He was a favorite amongst his peers and superiors alike.
"We've received word that countries worldwide have decided to allow members of the homosexual and/or the lesbian community to be apart of thwir military programs." Commander Sanchez began tentatively. Even though no one uttered a sound, a quick glance was stolen here and there. He deigned to continue.
"Our country, Familian, has decided to not rush into anything because of peer pressure. Hence they've decided to go through a 'test run'."
He gestured to the entourage behind him.
"So they've sent a volunteer willing to be the first 'experiment'. He will go through a 30 day trial to see if this program is worth the effort. "
As Commander Sanchez turned to look directly at him, James involuntarily shuddered with foreboding as he sensed what was about to be asked of him.
"You, Lt. Mayfield will be our guest's, who I will present formally in a minute, partner and roommate."
Despite the cold sweat running down his back, James still forced himself to acknowledge the commander as he was expected to, with a "Yes, Sir".
Dismissed to rejoin his seat, James looked up with everyone else as Commander Sanchez presented the "new soldier"."Arlington Hayes, son of Hiram and Myra Hayes, who are, as you all SHOULD know, benefactors for this country in a whole. I expect you all to be on your best behavior, and to treat him as an equal in every way. Give an honest effort to make this thing work. Understand???"
"Yes, Sir!"
"Alright. Carry on, Men." Commander Sanchez exited the room with the rest of the commanding officers and left Arlington Hayes behind. The soldiers eyed him warily as he glanced tentatively around the room. He was about 1m 65cm and pretty thin but wiry looking fellow. James decided he looked a bit scared, but then who wouldn't be? A full room of soldiers staring at you can be intimidating.
As James watched him in silence, as did the rest of the room, he began to think to himself the kid might not be so bad. But just then, Arlington tucked his longish hair behind his ear and struck a pose with his hand on his hip.
"Hey, Boys." He purred with a coy grin.
Almost immediately there were cat calls and boos as the room came to life. Everyone seemed to disperse rapidly.
Nick Wilson punched his friend James playfully in the shoulder.
"Have fun showing HER the ropes and make sure you stay a man!" James scowled at him as he laughed loudly and high fived a couple guys on his way out.
With a sigh, James walked up to Arlington who didnt help his situation by looking unmoved and amused by the whole deal.
He stuck out his hand.
"Hi. I'm..."
"The legendary Lt. James Mayfield!" Arlington interrupted excitedly, grabbing the hand in a soft and girlie handshake. James retrieved his hand as soon as possible, glancing around the room nervously, making sure no one was there, and quickly crossed his hands behind his back.
"I've dreamed of meeting you! You're soo hot!" He cooed batting his eye lashes.
James cringed inwardly. "Um...uh...stop...stop..." He stuttered awkwardly. "We're...uh...running late for...uh..."
"Oh yeah! The initiation thingy right?" Arlington giggled. "We should probably get to that."
He scurried over to the exit door. It was all James could do to NOT strangle himself. He sighed once again and jogged over to catch with the kid and take him to where he had to be.
