The letter

The months past and we forever wrote letters to each others when we could, only three weeks left and I was on R&R to go home and relax, we counted the days that seemed to far away. But I hadn't written to Claudia for weeks and I knew it would worry her if I didn't, the front line was quite busy and dangerous and I have had no time to write. The food was starting to taste horrible as we haven't had any supplies yet. The rain used to make the ground go all muddy and made corpses resurface or slide out of the wall of the trench, the smell was burning in our noses and wouldn't leave. The bombs that fell, the bullets that hit your mates and fellow men, the thought they would never see their families again made me feel sick.

The night was falling down on us making no mans land even darker as the minutes passed by, I sat down in the supply room and relaxed for a moment. The distant gunshot faded as darkness fell and you couldn't see anything, the dim light from the lamp gave enough to see the boxes and what the labels said. I took my pencil out and a piece of paper and started to write,

"'It's a burden to write this, but I am very aware that if I do not write, you will worry, and I would hate for you to worry. I will start from the beginning. We arrived at our base yesterday at 11.45 pm. The first thing I smelled was earth. Horrible dry earth. Then I thought of you: Your delicate and floral fragrance from your first letter, your dazzling smile, your blood red lips, and the beautiful pink blush you have, Your eyes are just paradise. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever met, and its only 17 days left and we will be rejoined again. Truly yours Freddie x." the paper felt heavy in my hands as I folded it and walked to sergeant majors office.
