Humankind was finally ready for interstellar travel. Decades of research, unspeakable sums of money and the dedication of our planet's best academic minds had culminated in one gargantuan starship. Constructed in low earth orbit, in the later stages it could be seen easily with the naked eye; a vast, skeletal frame slowly coloured in with metal casing. It was the Earth's first fully cooperative project, as every nation offered what they could and in return would earn places for their people aboard the ship. It seemed that in escaping Earth we had at last learned to share it peacefully, an irony that was lost on few. All nuclear warheads had long since been converted to propulsion engines.

The vessel was completed just in time, at the expense of almost all our remaining natural resources. Those who had been selected said their goodbyes and boarded the shuttles, whilst the rest of us waved them off, smothering our disappointment with the promise of a new beginning for humanity.

On launch day we gathered in homes and public squares across the globe to watch the great Ark take its first steps out into the universe:

The docking clamps disengaged.

Phase One thrusters initiated.

The hyper-core began its warm up procedure.

Navigation systems came online...

Starboard thrusters failed.

Explosions rocked the ship's stern.

The hull was compromised.

The world watched in horror as one billion people swivelled in space and ever so slowly began their apocalyptic descent back down to planet Earth.
