"Leah! Leah" my best friend Mary-Anne yelled as she ran down the school's hallway to catch up to me.
"Hey, Annie."
"Hey!" She said breathlessly "are you coming over tonight for a sleepover?"
"Course Annie, why wouldn't I?" Annie and I have had a sleepover every weekend since first grade. I'm not stopping the tradition now that we are seniors in high school.
"Just asking. See you tonight!" She said as she ran to her first class of the day. That girl has too much energy, I wish she could somehow transfer some to me because I could not be bothered with school today.I looked at the clock for like the hundredth time in 5 minutes. Two more minutes, then I'm out this bitch. I was the first one out of the class when the bell rang. I walked, almost ran, to my car because I was so ready to get away from this hell hole.
When I finally made it home, I went upstairs to pack for my sleepover with my bestie. God, I love her so much. She was one of the most special people in my life and has helped me through so much. My dad travels a lot for work, so I have some deep seeded abandonment issues, but Annie always makes me feel loved and cared for.
I was on my way to Annie's house when I got a call. I pulled over because safety first, duh, and picked it up.
"Hola."
"Hey, Leah?" It was Annie.
"Yup, Annie Pooh?"
"Can I come over to your house this weekend? My parents are fighting again and I just don't want to be here." I heard her sniffle. My Pooh bear is crying.
"Of course, Pooh bear. I'm already on my way, so I'll just pick you up."
"Okay. Thank you Leah, you're the best. See you when you get here."
"Kk. See you. Bye." I hung up my phone and started back on my journey to Annie's house.I sent her a quick "here" text when I arrived. 2 minutes later she came out with tears streaming down her eyes. My poor Pooh bear. Her parents are in the middle of a messy divorce, but are still living in the same house, so things get pretty bad pretty fast. She hopped in and told me to drive. We drove in silence except for the faint sound of my radio. I know she needs a moment before she likes to discuss these things, so I give her all the time she needs.
We arrived at my house 10 minutes later, got our bags out the back, and walked in. "Home sweet home." I said. She didn't say anything and just went straight upstairs. I went into the kitchen and got her favorite snack— gummy worms and apple juice. I went upstairs and handed her the plate and cup. She gave me a grateful smile and started devouring her "food", if that's what you want to call it. I laid back on my bed and stared at the ceiling, waiting for her to start talking about what happened.
"He hit me, Lee."
"What?" I replied, a little more than confused.
"My dad. He hit me. I tried to intervene him yelling at my mom, he was saying such horrible things. Saying she deserved to miscarry and how him losing his job is her fault. I couldn't take it anymore, so I went up to him and told him to shut his ass up and that everything that happened to him was his own damn fault. I should've ran, but I stayed right where I was, looking him dead in his eyes. I knew what was coming, but I was willing to take it like a woman for my mom. He slapped me so hard that I fell on the floor. It only made things worse, though. My mom got so mad and it only made things worse." She started to cry.I tried to comfort her. I let her lay on my lap and I examined her face. Damn. It was red and was starting to welt, I hadn't noticed it in the car. What kind of friend am I?
"How about you just take a nap Pooh, and we can watch movies and order food when you wake up, okay?"
"Okay." She said.
I was rubbing her back and playing in her hair until she fell asleep. I didn't dare move, not risking waking her up. I just sat there thinking about her bastard of a dad and the things I'd do to him if I get my hands on him. Hitting his own daughter, hitting my Pooh Pooh. Oh hell no!I hadn't noticed I fell asleep too, until I woke up with an empty lap.
"Annie?" I yelled.
"I'm coming!" She yelled from downstairs. She came up with Chinese food.
"I hope you don't mind, I drove your car to get this. I needed to clear my mind a little bit."
"Yeah, that's fine. I wish you'd get your license first, though." I snickered.
"Ah hush. I can drive, the DMV just thinks I can't." I laughed.
"Come on, lets eat. What do you wanna watch?" She asked.
"Hmmm... American Horror Story?" I said with a smile.
"Why did I even ask?" She said. That was my favorite show, but Annie didn't like it too much. It always seemed to scare her, but she needs to get over that cause it's a good ass show.
