Pete, the girl, the boy, and I all crouch down by the back door. We all have bags on our backs, each with water, food, matches, and flashlights.

"Okay, here's the plan," Pete whispers.

" I'm going to open this door and Chris will lead you to our car. Our dog will be in the back seat. I need one of you to grab his snout and keep him quiet. Chris, get ready to start the car, and be ready to hit the gas, okay?" We all nod in agreement.

"Chris, if I don't make it to the car.." He begins to tear up, and I stop him mid-sentence.

"You WILL make it to the car. There is no if. We're in this together." I say while fighting back tears. He smiles at me and kisses my forehead. "Keep your head up, Angel. I love you." I smile back at him, and he reaches for the door handle. I swallow my fear and get ready to run. I hear the windows break and the front door getting shot at. The men are coming. Pete pushes the door open. We run for it. The three of us make it to the car and we climb inside. I put the key in my right hand and get ready to start the car, but wait. I look over at the door we came out of, for what seems to be several minutes, waiting. Pete where are you...? King is frightened in the back seat, shaking from both fear and the cold. The kids are petting him to keep him calm. He's whining.

The door opens and Pete runs out, with dog food on one shoulder and a bag full of canned food on the other. "START THE CAR!" he mouths to me. I put the key in and turn it, Pete climbs in the car.

"Go!" He yells.
