Chapter 14- Establishing Intimidation

The next morning finds Cato and I in the elevator, on our way down to the Training Room. Even though we’re alone for one of the first times since we arrived, we don’t say much, knowing that we are undoubtedly being filmed. The only thing spoken throughout the ride is, “Let’s do this, Clove,” by Cato, just before the doors slide open silently.

We are one of the first pairs to arrive. Arennia instructed us to befriend the District One tributes, and scope out what other tributes might be useful. We just stand there looking intimidating and arrogant, until the pair from One comes in. Cato and I share a look, before going over to them. The girl sees us coming first, and her face lights up as she openly checks Cato out. Then she sees me and quickly sizes me up. Her face shows a small grimace of disgust, before it vanishes off her perfect face. What? What could be wrong? I think I look cute today. Nero has me wearing a green and black workout set, complete with pants, tank top and light jacket. Cato is also wearing a workout suit, but his are men’s, obviously, and they are blue and black instead. When we entered, a couple of Avoxes came over and pinned fabric number 2’s on our suits.

While I was thinking about what she could possibly be irritated by, I almost missed her next move. As soon as we got close, she ran right up to Cato and stuck out her hand. “Hi, I’m Glimmer.” Figures, stupid name for a stupid blonde. Her partner comes up also, “I’m Marvel.” “I’m Cato, and this is my gir-, um, this is Clove,” he stammers, trying to recover from his slip-up. “So, Marvel, with a name like that, what are your ‘marvelous’ abilities?” he questions. “I’m good with some various things, why?” “Well, as you know, it’s customary for our Districts to form an alliance, seeing as how it will be one of us that wins. What say you? Are you guys in?” Glimmer quickly jumps in, “Of course we are.” I give her a suspicious glare, which she returns with an ‘if looks could kill’ one. Both Cato and Marvel are oblivious to our obvious contempt for each other. It’s clear to me that she only wants to be in so she can flirt with Cato. The only thing I’m concerned about, is keeping her away from him, until I can kill her. After all, she is the girl from One, whom I swore to be rid of, for Zane. Even if she isn’t the same girl, based on what I’ve seen in the last few minutes, I’d say she might as well be. The boys are in the midst of a conversation about various spear heads, so Glimmer and I just stand there watching each other, with hatred flaming in both of our eyes.

Just then, the doors open and the fire girl, Katniss, and her partner enter. Everyone turns to watch them, as they are the last to arrive. Also, they are both wearing matching suits, how ridiculous and sick is that? I mean, to present them as a team, and then have to watch each other die? It’s horrible.

I am interrupted from my thoughts by Cato tugging on my arm. We walk over to where the other tributes are gathering. A woman steps up onto a stool, so she can be seen by everyone. She introduces herself as Atala, the head trainer. “Alright tributes, here are the ground rules. You will have two and a half days to practice, before your private sessions with the Gamemakers. There are many stations around this room, use them wisely. Everyone wants to get a weapon, but most of you will die from natural causes. Exposure, can kill as easily as a sword. Also, no fighting with the other tributes, you’ll have plenty of time for that in the arena. There are trainers on hand if you want to practice. You may go.” She dismisses us, and Cato and I head over to the weapons stations. Glimmer and Marvel follow, much to my dismay. Cato must realize something is up, because he gives me a funny look, but doesn’t say anything. Cato and Marvel both pick up swords and begin practicing with the various dummies around. Glimmer stands to the side fawning over Cato. I am watching the hulking boy from Eleven, who is throwing spears. He would be a good one to have on our side, I think. I turn my attention back to our group, where Cato has paused to talk to Glimmer about something, and she has gotten closer to him. I watch for a moment, before blondie over there decides to lay her hand on his arm. I don’t know why, but that move always sends me over the edge. It did with Ria, and now it is with Glimmer.
