Chapter10
When Eva and Lewis walked in, Eva looked around to make sure no one was looking, then sneakily hugged Lewis, Then, she walked in and something in her mind seemed to tell her she was incredibly happy but Eva didn’t have time to work out why as Karen bounded up to her the moment she walked through the door like a great dog and spun her round.
“Guess what just happened about ten seconds ago?” Karen squealed. “Um, there’s going to be a show?” Eva clearly had no idea at all. “Jordy just asked me out!” She was so excited, Eva had to physically place her hands on Karen’s shoulders to stop her floating up onto the ceiling. “Oh, Karen! That’s lovely. It’s so sweet, I knew that was about to happen! I’ve got...”
Miss Clark clapped her hands just then and everyone scrambled to get to their partners and into places before the piano started playing. Eva and George smiled experimentally at each other then set to dancing and when the music stopped, the teacher applauded. “Eva and George, that was the best performance I’ve ever seen you do, well done!” They grinned at each other and the ice was broken.
Siling at Eva, Lewis came down from the balcony and winked at her before steering Jordy away for a tête-a-tête.
“Karen, you know the fabulous about you and Jordy, well, I have some good news and some not-so-good news. Ok, the not so good news is that I have broken up with George,” Karen’s face lit up, then fell again as she got her emotions under control, Eva laughed “and the good news is, I am not trying to steal your limelight here Karen but Lewis and I.. well, it just kind of happened really.” Karen jumped up and down, squealing “Hush, Karen, please! You and Jordy being together is so much more romantic though because he asked you, how did he ask you by the way? Whatever he said, it will be much sweeter than Lewis and I because of what happened.”
“Well. A few moments before, George came up to me, coughing nervously and asked me if I would go out with Jordy, I thought he was joking so I ran into ze toilettes” Karen’s carefully schooled accent dissipated when she was het up. “Persephone came in after me and told me that Jordy wanted to talk to me alone- She emphasised it too, not just me!-Anyway, I’d half believed George because I’m not daft but my heart started pumping harder and harder, I followed her out and saw Jordy. Everyone immediately dispersed and pretended not to be listening. I walked up to them and asked ‘You needed to talk to me?’ he said ‘Um, yeah’,- the little slob- and went deathly quiet. I stared at the floor a lot and he just blurted it out!”
“What?” Eva cried.
“He just said ‘Uh, basically, I fancy you’ and I said, ’Yeah, I lied’ because the last time I spoke to him, he asked me if I liked him and I told him I didn’t which was clearly untrue! So then he said, “Well, I guess I’m asking you the question then aren’t I” and so I immediately said, “Yes”. You walked through the door and I just ran off!” There was an interval of squealing and then Karen remembered Eva’s news.
“Oh, Eva, it’s so lovely! How did it happen then, if he didn’t ask you?”
“Well, to cut a long story short, he talked in his sleep and told me what he thought or felt about me and then I realised I felt the same but I had to break up with George which was hard and not particularly helped by Lewis but I did it and we’re still good friends!” She drew in a deep breath.
“I can tell you’re happy because your eyes have gone blue”
“WHAT!?”
“Your eyes go blue when you’re delighted or very very, very angry like that time in our first year at school that girl Catherine Goodman who stole your doll then when you took it back, she told Sister Mary and so you got told off. That was the first time I ever noticed it and I can still remember Sister’s face when she tried to get you to do eye contact and saw them! She nearly fainted!”
“Oh, I remember that! I have never realised before! WOW. Anyway, look at the boys, talking about us most likely!”
“Eva! You’re too confident for your own good sometimes. You are probably right though!” Karen giggled. Lewis and Jordy walked back towards the girls.
“Eva, I’m going to go with Jordy now, if that’s ok with you?” Lewis asked almost apologetically.
“Oh, yes, that’s fine, would you like me to have any of your possessions sent over?”
“No, no, I left some stuff there so it’s no problem.” He stepped forward and kissed Eva on the cheek before getting into Karen’s car with her and Jordy.
Walking home that day with a spring in her step, Eva finally had some time to think, about boys, life in general and her twin. She stopped dead. Jordy. Was it really true that twins had some kind of intuition mechanism? Could they really tell what the other was thinking?
Maybe, just maybe, that happiness she felt walking into the dance hall was connected to the fact Karen had just agreed to go out with Jordy! But that meant... Eva groaned, that meant Jordy had felt what she had in the past week. Joy, despair and mortal embarrassment. By the time Eva had thought this all over, she was back at her house putting her hand up to knock on the door. ‘I must remember to ask him about that’ Eva thought herself.
