The only thought that went through Detective Nan Abrron's mind as she drove through the gate of the Cadmium State Prison was that what she was doing was insane and reckless and maybe she should of stayed at home this morning, instead of doing the two hour long drive it took to get to the prison. That maybe for once, she put her foot down to her Captain and his hair brained ideas. But as she put her car in park and turned it off she glanced over at her bag. Simple and light brown in color, no one would of known it held all the information of the biggest cases of the last two years.

The Baba Yaga case as some of her co workers, including her caption would call it. A mass murderer on the loose, killing kids and leaving the parents a awful truth in the morning. Their child, gone and forever knowing their child’s last moments were filled with outright fear and terror. As all of the victims had been found as if they died of fear, eyes wide open and mouths open to scream.

A knock on her window pulled her out of her thoughts as she looked up to her Captain with a raised hand and a lazy smile on his face.

Captain Asmere, A man that Nan herself liked and respected but never trusted. She never really understood how he got to the position of captain but she was sure it had something to do with his charming and seductive voice, and the cunning look in his eyes. Most if not all women in the precinct prayed to be called to his office. However Asmere, as charming as he could be, met his match with Nan and soon after the awkward moment of realizing his charms were ineffective they had become good friends. But work always came first for them both, so they would often find themselves pouring over cases in the early hours of the morning with a pot of coffee between them.

“Lost in that pretty head of yours Darling?” His smooth and naughty tone made her smile as she got off out her car, bag in tow,  and straight into the summer breeze.

Non, Simply thinking ‘ow stupid this idea of yours is.” He gave a chuckle as he held out his arm to her, which she took.

“Please Nan, I know you don’t trust me-” She snorted and he gave her a look. “But he might provide good insight on the case. He is the only one to have actually gone toe to toe with our suspect and actually lived.” He squeezed her arm as they walked into the building.

“Captain Asmere Terin and Detective Nan Abrron.” Nan paused, the papers in her hand feeling damp as she looked up to the deputy office, staring down at a clipboard. They had waited for nearly another hour as they made them wait.

“Finally.” Asmere muttered as she watched his hand skillfully wipe away the sweat on his brow with a handkerchief. Nan for a moment wished she still carried one, as the waiting area they sat in was small and the only source of cool air was a small old fan that as soon as they had walked in, the receptionist turned toward her. Nan had wished that it was because the middle aged woman was a bit warm or even going through menopause, but she had seen out of the corner of her eye the glares being sent her way as she sat down next to the Captain.

Sometimes she wished they could see his face after two days of no rest and too much coffee, with the marks of her couch cushions imprinted on his cheek.

He wasn’t so attractive then.

“Right this way.” As they passed through the door, the air was cooler and Nan gave a small sigh as they were lead  through different checkpoints through the prison.

For a Prison, Cadmium State was as standard as it got, at least from the outside, inside however, was a much different story. Past the first few areas for employees, they passed the area for minor offenders, simple and mostly quiet. But as they  got deeper, the cells became smaller and the guns much larger as they were passed from guard to guard.Until finally, they reached the Warden. He wasn’t a tall man, but instead stout and thick around the chest. His hair was uniform but was a soft blonde, and he had kind eyes.

“Warden. Thank you for letting us do this visit today.” Asmere smiled, his white teeth standing out against his almost perfect brown skin.

“Of course Capitan Terin,  when I heard what it was going to be about, I made room on the schedule.Whatever I can do to help.” The man turned toward Nan and gave her a polite smile.

“Miss?”

“Abrron, Please. Call me detective.” He gave a small confused glance to Asmere, who simple smiled.

It was something she got often enough, it barely bothered her anymore. After all what would a petite french woman have anything to do with a Crime investigation. It was beyond most people who looked at her. Silky black hair and bright grey eyes, with a killer waistline and an ass that demanded to be noticed, ashamed as she was to admit it, the first thing anyone usually thinking looking at her is Model, Actress, Sexpot; not lead and active Detective for the Candidum Police Department.

“Of course, this way please.” As he lead them down a hallway, she felt the warmth of summer flee as the blank walls got closer together and the lights themselves seem to grow dimmer. She would of imagined that she would of heard sounds of inmates screaming or yelling but it was dead silent. Almost as he read her mind, Asmere leaned down.

“We are in the Solitary wing, Thats where he is being held.” Right. She had read that.

“Don't worry you’ll be alright Nan.” He gave her arm a squeeze as she let loose a breathe she didn’t know she was holding.

Here we are.” Two deputies with matching dark outfits stood in front of the door, saluting them as they stopped. She took in the Glock 22 on their hip and the 9mm She spotted on the other side. Not surprising considering who they were about to talk to. What kind of deal they might make.

“He is waiting inside, Don’t worry he is chained down to the table and seat. So you won't have to worry about him slipping free.” It concerned her that, that was even a worry.

“Perfect now, shall I do the honors or would you like to take first crack at him Detective?” Asmere turned toward her and she wanted to run back to the tiny waiting room and back to her car, where she had left her water bottle. But instead she squared her shoulders and forced her breathing to become slower.

“I’ll go first, if you do not mind.” Asmere inclined his head as he shuffled the warden into the room of the other side of the glass, and she took in a breath. Remember what her father use to say.

Always ready, Mon Cher, Always prepared.
