I begrudgingly walked down the supermarket aisle with my step mum. She dragged me clothes shopping, and now we're in a Coles to grab some vegetables for dinner. I sighed. Bored out of my mind, I wanted to be back at school, away from the constant arguing of my parents. I pulled out my phone deciding to text my girlfriend.
Hey Kaylee, What's up?
...
No reply, she must be busy. I put my phone back in my pocket and follow my step mum aimlessly. I then felt my pocket buzz. I immediately pulled out my phone hoping it was Kaylee or one of my other friends... It was only a YouTube notification. I added it to my watch later anyway then slid the device back into my pocket.
"Hey Ryze, did you hear that?" My step mum stopped and looked around.
I looked at her confused. "Hear what?"
"Shhhh!"
"Help me..." A faint voice called a few aisles down.
My Step mum started pacing quickly towards the plea. I followed not knowing what else to do. We saw a few people circling something. I'd never seen this happen in a supermarket before.
"Hey, you lot, what's going on?" My step mum demanded.
None of them seemed to react to her.
"I'm talking to you!" She huffed impatiently.
She grabbed one of the mans shoulders and turned him, or rather it, to face us. It was a slickly cream colour, it's eyes sunken and black. Drool falling out of its mouth. I could've probably said it was just an I'll human if it wasn't for the almost identical 4 others.
"Ryze. Run." I heard my step mum say.
I looked up at her as she's staring at this thing petrified.
"I won't leave you." I stood my ground.
She looked at me with caring eyes. Before they flashed with pain. We both looked at the culprit. The zombie bit a huge chunk out if her arm. Blood flowed out as she pushed me with her other arm. Hard. I fell into the aisle rack and it fell, breaking a part. More Zombies were on their way, I needed to defend myself. My choices were tin of beans, my bloodied hands from the fall, or the pole that helps support the rack.
The choice was obvious.
I grabbed a tin of beans and flung it at the zombies head. It looked up at me, clearly not happy.
"Shit... Wrong choice!"
The thing leaped at me. I quickly grabbed the bar and defended myself. It was pushing against the bar and I was pushing back.
Glad I go to the gym.
I was able to push it off me, then whack it across its stupid head. I jumped up, stumbling a bit as I ran for the exit. The pole still in my hand. As I got into the car park I took a deep breath. My Step Mum just got eaten and I ran away...
I soon saw a bunch of dead bodies rising and wiggling in the car park. I shook my head. I need to get out of here. Most the cars were gone or crashed. I then heard hysterical laughter. I looked towards the sound. The Bunnings across the road, its carpark had someone running around smashing people up. I could see the blood from here. I should stop them, we need to leave before even more come.
I run towards the laughter. As I got closer I saw it was a girl, with an axe, killing zombies. She was drenched with blood.
"Hey, stop that!" I called getting closer.
She stopped as she finished off the last zombie in the area. Her back was towards me. She turned slowly and looked at me. I recognized her, she went to my school.
She then raised her axe at me. I saw tears flow out of her blue eyes.
"Die Zombies. Just DIE!" She screeched swinging the axe towards me.
"Woah! I'm human!" I say narrowly dodging the axe.
Her insane look didn't waver. As she raised her axe again. I quickly whacked her side with my pole. She dropped the axe and I hugged her. She was clearly in pain. I felt the blood soak into my shirt as I hugged her.
"Shhhh. Its ok. Calm down, lets just get out of here" I whisper softly.
I feel her grip my shirt and hug me tightly, crying into my shoulder.
"They killed him... Right there... I couldn't help..." She muffled into my shirt.
I looked around. It was empty. For now, but who knows when more zombies will arrive.
"Lets just get somewhere safer than here for now." I pet her hair.
I felt her nod into my shirt as she pulled away. She grabbed her axe and I flinched slightly, but realised she wouldn't attack me again. She sniffed.
"Best place in this situation is probably school. Since its Saturday no one will be there. And its fenced off all around." She said walking towards our high school.
"How do you know this?" I asked, skeptical.
"I'm a huge zombie nerd." She shrugged wiping her eyes of tears.
I decided to follow her lead since she seemed to know more than me...
