Pitter, patter, on the grass, someone please, come bite me in the ass, the rhyme goes through my mind over and over. The sun above us was scorching as we trudged through the thick forest, though I don't complain. I keep my mouth shut, and follow behind Farroh, the leader of this unit.
It's been two years since I've last seen my family. Two years since I've gone completely undercover, my best friend along my side. Father has trained me well in the past two centuries; I cannot fail him.
"Alright," we come to a halt, "let's make camp." Farroh moves to make a makeshift tent as his right hand, Peter, follows right beside him.
The pair were quite unusual. Farroh was always yelling orders and finding a way to fight someone, while Peter kept quiet and to himself. The two were always stuck together like glue, perhaps in another world they might've been mated together.
"Amy," Isabella elbows my side, "let fix camp, you grump," she teases. Isabella has been with our family since I was a mere child. We grew up together in the castle. It amazes me how she manages to look so youthful, most witches didn't make it past 80, but Isabella wasn't just any witch, she's a Bennett witch; powerful, ancestral magic flowed through her veins.
She has always been my family's eyes and ears of the outside world, since we were to remain hidden. Growing up I didn't understand why we had to live in secret, but it turns out that the world hates us, even our own kind. Father never spoke of what occurred to cause such a banishment, only that the royal family must be kept hidden until it was time to show ourselves.
I pitch the tent, then move to lie down on my green sleeping bag. Isabella was already snoring away, making it nearly impossible to sleep. I close my eyes and focus on my hearing. As not only a vampire, but a royal, my senses were impeccable, making it possible for me to hear for miles. My ears slightly twitch at the raspy voice of Farroh, "and what about it!" His voice rises, "we have to find them, and kill them. End of discussion," he hisses. I could only assume he is speaking to Peter, perhaps they are having a lovers quarrel.
I close my eyes, slightly humming the same tune over and over, pitter, patter, on the grass, please someone, come bite me in the ass. Father would've laughed at my silly rhyme, while mother made a face of disgust, truly opposite those two are, but they manage to find a middle ground where their love blooms from.
Father had told me that one day I would rule over the kingdom, but first I needed to build it up, and show the world who their Queen is. These two years spent in the world have been eye opening. We help the humans, and fight off the rogues. I was sent here to experience the world, to find its weakness, then conquer it. With Isabella, at my side, I'll have the world at my feet.
________
My mind was foggy as my eyes fluttered opened, I hadn't remembered falling asleep. The sound of Farroh's yelling had woken me from my slumber, that annoying bastard.
"You're glaring again," a sing song voice interrupts my thoughts. Isabella smiled warmly, "pack your things, I heard we got a mission from HQ," she whispered in excitement.
HQ? They have never contacted us for a mission, only sanctioning us to protect over the southern area.
It wasn't long until we stopped again, this time near a waterfall.
"Hunters," Farroh called. Go ahead and announce our arrival, I thought bitterly. "Abraham has given us a level 12 mission," a chorus of gasps echoed the area.
"But...sir, that's the highest level," Nimmy the nimrod spoke hesitantly.
Farroh glared at the stout man, "and? Are you implying something Nimford," his chipped tooth on display.
Nimmy shook his head.
"We will hike up those mountains," he pointed up north, "and infiltrate the pack. Our goal is to eliminate the Alpha, then we leave immediately." He clasped his hands together, then turned to Peter and began walking off.
Multiple, incoherent voices whispered around, even with my enhanced hearing I couldn't make out their scattered words. I shrugged, walking back to pick my bag from the floor.
"Amy," Isabella grabbed onto my arm, causing me to pull it away and glare at her, though it didnt faze her.
"What," I spit, annoyed by her handsy actions
She grabbed my arm again, and pulled me out of the others' eyesight, "we cant go up there," her voice serious.
Her nervous aura had my stomach unsettled, "what is wrong with you, Isabella? Why are you acting like some scared bitch? "
"Do you know whose pack resides up there," her eyes moving up north. I shook my head. "That's the Mountain Ash Pack, Alpha Rush's pack," her voice coming out as a whisper as she said the Alpha's name.
I scoffed, "and?" I turned away from her, "it's just some beefed up version of a rogue," I turn back to face her, "surely our unit can take him out, and if not, I can always use a little vamp juice," I chuckled.
She grabbed my arm again, this time with more pressure, "princess Amala, I urge you to not go up that mountain. Alpha Rush is a monster. He is known for his strength and has a murderous streak. Please, princess, I have not told you nor your family of everything that is going on in our world, and for that I apologize, but we need to go home, now."
I ripped her hand off of my arm, "if this Alpha is what you fear, perhaps it is better if I eliminate him now, while I have the help of the hunters," I held onto her hand, slowly crushing it, "now, do well to keep you hands off of me. We are like family, but do not forget that I am your future Queen."
She cradled her hurt hand, and nodded her head.
"Good. Let's go back before they get suspicious".
