It had been a week since the incident and neither Mal nor Evie had told anyone or even spoken about it amongst each other. Evie was keeping a close eye on Mal, however. Not always asking her how she was by trying to interpret her body language or pay closer attention to the tone of her voice.

"How you doin', E?" Mal asked her one evening.

"Oh, so it's okay when you ask me?" Evie responded sarcastically. "I'm doing okay. I'm about to go and see Chad. Wanna come?"

"Not particularly," Mal replied, Evie picking up the slight annoyance in Mal's voice after mentioning his name.

"M, he saved our lives. The least you could do is visit him occasionally."

"I still haven't forgiven him."

"If he hadn't come and saved us... who knows where we'd be right now?"

"If he had shut down Amare Artis when he was in charge, we wouldn't've been captured."

"If your dad hadn't started Amare Artis, Chad would've never gotten involved," Evie shot back, instantly realizing her mistake and wanting to take it back. "No, ugh! I'm so sorry! It's obviously not your fault and I should've never brought him up! I'm so sorry, Mal. That was a stupid thing to say I'm really sorry—" Mal cut off Evie with a soft and lengthy kiss.

"I know you didn't mean to," Mal whispered. "It's okay." She took Evie's trembling hand. "I'm not coming with you. But please stay safe, and don't kiss him." Mal chuckled.

"I promise I won't," Evie replied with a smile. "I love you."

"Love you too," Mal answered, giving Evie another kiss before she left the room.

Thomas was on duty alone at the prison that evening. It was a Sunday night, so visiting hours ended earlier than usual. All the inmates were quiet, some sleeping already and other finishing up their provided dinners. He looked out the glass doors, seeing Evie on her way in. He reached under the counter and held an old plastic water bottle that was filled with a very light blue liquid, nearly looking clear. He quickly made his way over to the water cooler on the other side of the lobby, dumping the potion into the machine. Thomas tossed the bottle into the trash and dashed back behind the counter just as Evie opened the door.

"Hey Evie," Thomas greeted as she walked inside. "I assume you're here to see Chad as usual?"

"You got it," she replied, strolling up to the counter. "Slow day?"

"Is it ever a fast one?" he chuckled. "The only time we had a huge crowd was when the press wanted to interview Romulus, but I wouldn't let 'em in. We've got a new water cooler, so feel free to try it out." He gestured towards the machine in the corner of the room.

"I am feeling a little thirsty," Evie stated, walking towards the machine. She pulled a cup out of the tube attached to the side of the machine and pushed down on the small lever, filling her cup. She took a big gulp, drinking the cold liquid rapidly. She wiped her mouth with sleeve and tossed the used cup into the trash where the water bottle laid.

"You know, you came pretty close to quittin' time," Thomas said, taking his hat off, revealing his messy and slightly sweaty short brown hair. He walked over towards the door, slowly turning the OPEN sign to CLOSED.
