Chapter 5

I am awoken by the sound of my mother, her face is leaning into mine her beady eyes looking suspicious.

“Ella what have you been doing?” she asks sounding annoyed.

I frown at her “It’s your fault, you should have been back ages ago, I got tired waiting” I say attempting to heave myself up, as I do I notice the photo frame I went to sleep holding; it is lying on the floor under the coffee table. If I leave it there my mum will see it and start asking me all sorts but if I put it back in its place she won’t even notice it all.

“Did you cook dinner?” mum asks a hint of hopefulness in her voice.

“Yes, I did.” I answer “mum I’m going out okay?”

“Where?” she asks her beady eyes boring into mine.

I sigh and think, there is no way I’m going to tell her I’m going out with Kian, I can’t say friend either because that is not very believable.

“Um shopping,” I say smiling brightly.

“Shopping?” my mum echoes disbelievingly.

“Yes, see you later,” I say moving around her.

“El, wait say hi to your Grandma,” mum shouts after me.

“Hi grandma” I shout as I run up the stairs, I don’t hear a reply.

I was rifling through my clothes last night and I left my final choices on the bed, I choose the black jeans and black dress with white hearts, I convince myself that I’m not choosing my favourite clothes for Kian, I am just choosing them because they’re dark and so the flour and whatnot won’t look so obvious in the dark.

When I am finally done, I head for the door then stop in my tracks as I hear the voices from the kitchen, I tiptoe closer so I can hear.

“They are a very well off family,” Grandma Hayley says.

“I know, it would do a lot for us,” my mum says, I can imagine her biting her fingernails and standing by the table, that expression on her face.

“It would do a lot of Ella too, she’s become quite....” Grandma Hayley stops abruptly “can you hear something?” she says suspiciously.

Oh bloody hell, she’s supposed to be old; she shouldn’t be able to hear little sounds like that I think crossly, kicking the stupid thing that fell to the floor making the noise. I go into the kitchen before she walks out.

“Hi grandma,” I say offering a tiny smile.

She narrows her beady eyes at me “were you listening to our conversation?” she asks sternly.
